Hi, I'm JACE .
Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet.
Don't forget to toss me a note about what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings.

Free Money in the New Year
Everyone likes free money. Of course, the cynical among us would say there "ain't no such thing." And they'd be right.
But here on Writing.Com you can get mighty close to free. At least you can earn our own currency, WDC gift points, for doing something you already love to do--writing. I suspect you wouldn't be here if you didn't enjoy writing.
A new year invites us to identify our writing goals for the coming months. How will you use Writing.Com's resources to help you achieve those goals? Will you need a paid membership? Can you afford that membership? Perhaps you can....
You can use WDC Gift Points to pay for new or upgrade current memberships. Though there's no discount for using GPs, you can easily earn them through a variety of sources on site.
The easiest way to grow a sizable nest egg is simply posting your writing goals each Monday on "Weekly Goals" AND returning to the forum on Friday with your results. Each post earns 1000 GPs, or more than 100K for the year. A word to the wise: Read the Fine Print from The StoryMistress .
Put some thought into your goals and make them count. Gift Points are awarded by my discretion. If I feel someone is not putting forth any efforts in their goals or updates and is only posting to take advantage of the Gift Point reward, I will not distribute a reward to that person.
Potentially, reviewing is more lucrative than posting goals. And reviewing has the added benefit of helping to improve your writing skills. A couple of years back, I tracked the gift points I received from reviewing beginning in January. I earned more than 325,000 GPs in five months.
Reviewing groups rewards their members with points.
Members get GPs from the Daily Rewards system based on how many qualified reviews are submitted each day. (See " Daily Review Rewards" )
Members receive GPs from the Review Mixer by reviewing an author for the first time. (See " The Review Mixer" )
Every member has the opportunity to reward reviewers on the Public Review page. (See " Public Review Rewards" )
Reviewers may receive GPs automatically from members who designate selected items with auto-rewards. (See " Auto-Rewards" )
Finally, members can receive GPs from WDC by submitting reviews to " Good Deeds Get CASH!" .
And I don't have time to get into the gift points you can receive from entering official WDC and member-sponsored contests. Check out "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" for contest listings.
Take advantage of the writing opportunities that Writing.Com has to offer whether from the free resources or the incredibly diverse tools offered in the paid membership levels. You may not have the cash to purchase a membership, but you can earn enough gift points for the membership you desire by just writing.
