Letter from the editor

In response to last month's newsletter question a reader ask fantasy publishers. He wanted to know how to find the right one to submit your work to, which is a question I have ask myself for a long time. He also wanted to know how to breakout of his portfolio and into the real world. These are questions I intend to answer in 2014 because I too would like to get some of my works published in the real world.

I know the part of the answer is research and finding places such as website or groups that announce open calls for submission. I have joined one of those groups on Facebook and am in the process of investigating some of the submission request now. Over the next twelve months I am planning to focus on different fantasy and science fiction genres with suggestions on where to find publishers or e-zines. I want to answer the following questions "Is it all right to submit stories without pay?" and "What are the rules for breaking out of your portfolio and into the real world?"

I want to encourage those attempting publication to do like the little engine (most of us remember that story from our childhood) and just keep trying. While you are trying to get published keep writing, rewriting, editing, and reviewing. Learn your weak spots, for instance, I know one of my week spots is grammar. So when I post stories for review I will be asking about the grammar. If you know your weak spots and limitations then you can find ways to overcome them.

Cat Girl Open in new Window. (E)
Short story based on the fable, "Aphrodite & the Cat"
#1944418 by Thomas Browning Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: “So as I was saying,” he began, but then suddenly stopped. She was not paying any attention to him. She was looking past him. Her eyes were locked on something on the other side of the room. She looked like a cat that had just seen a ghost. He tried to follow her gaze but he could not see anything there. “Sweetheart,” he said. “What’s wrong? What is it? What do you see?”

The end of General Custer? Open in new Window. (E)
Radical native Americans travel through time to 24th June 1876 with a malicious intent.
#1965595 by Steve Goodman Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: It was 3 am, when the normal became abnormal. The security gate at a Government research facility in downtown Wymore was suddenly thrown into turmoil, when it was wracked by machine gunfire coming from a black Chrysler people-carrier that had drawn level with the service window. Unprepared the attending officer was catapulted backwards off his chair with blood flowering from his chest. Two other officers suffered a similar fate.

Excerpt: Have you ever seen the huge coffee cups that they sell in 7-Eleven stores? I bought one of the turquoise ones, the kind with black wording that said "Refillable" on the outside and the word "GIANT" next to it with pink diamonds all around. The cup is terribly tacky and ugly, I'm afraid, but I adore drinking coffee from plastic, insulated cups. It tastes better that way. At least, that's what I used to think.

Excerpt: “In the middle of the ocean. How did I end up here? Oh yes, I remember! My wife decided I needed a vacation. What I really think she meant is that she needed a vacation from me. So she buys me a boat, sends me off on this crazy sea voyage, and what happens? It sinks. It sinks! And now, I can’t even see anything because there’s so much fog around! I feel like I’m in our tiny little shower thing at home where she put up her pink curtains… PINK… in my bathroom. Can you imagine? Geez, and now I’m talking to myself, maybe I’m…

Ask & Answer

ENB Author Icon writes: Thanks for highlighting my piece:)I've been reading a lot on Tolkien, and he really did a lot of editing in his work. Or, should I say,his son did. In some cases Tolkien even changed the names of his characters over four times! I have to admit that I too have some trouble with consistency, but I like to have all my notes, maps, and notebooks around when I'm writing so as to keep some consistency flowing.

Joshiahis Author Icon writes: Any subjects for the New Year? Hmmm... {e:ponder} How about highlighting some tips to filter through different fantasy publishers to find the right one to submit your work to? There's so much stuff out there that it's confusing, especially these e-zines. Who's credible, who's not? Is it okay to submit stories without pay, and seek glory rather than fortune? What's the RULES to break out of one's portfolio and into the real world?

BIG BAD WOLF is Howling Author Icon writes: A story set in the After-life is interesting, especially when the afterlife takes the form of a book you've read.

brom21 Author Icon writes: Dude, your editing points really hit the nail. I have a problem with editing and making corrections. It is such a daunting task to go back over pages and pages of work and make everything cohesive. The hardest part is deleting the content I like allot in order for the story to flow or have more effect. So about how hard is it to go back and edit an entire novel?

If anyone has any answers to the questions ask in the letter from the editor section, please let me know.
