How Scary Do You Need It?
Is reading scary stories similar to eating spicy food? I think so!
What do spicy food and scary stories have in common you ask? I tell you.
When it comes to scary stories, the levels of tolerance are very different from one reader to the next. For me, all it takes is a window creaking in the wind to have me completely freaked out. Seriously, if the story genre is listed as scary or horror, I will be jumpy at the smallest detail, even if the outcome of the creaking window is no more than somebody coming from the inside and close it firmly ... to be grabbed by something behind them?
I can't handle scary stories, horror, gore, or anything designed to make my skin crawl. I recognized that as a teenager after watching Evil Dead, that I never ever wanted to watch a horror movie again. Unfortunately, I was forced to read Edgar Allan Poe for school, and a friend told me I would not be a good German if I didn't read all of Franz Kafka's works. One could argue that Kafka is more deranged that scary. I tell you, it is freaky when you read a story about somebody being followed around. Being trapped inside of the mind of a schizophrenic person is scary. Especially since some of those thoughts appear so real and plausible. How close to insanity is each of us really? That type of thinking is just as scary to me as stories where gore reigns over plot or thoughts.
How does this relate to spicy food?
Growing up in a northern country, I had no need to develop an affinity for hot or spicy foods. I can taste fine nuances in the blandest of foods and I like it like that. Over the years, I have come to appreciate spicy foods with the limits of being polite. I don't cry if something spicy burns my taste buds, but that doesn't mean I enjoyed the meal. Yes, I will eat the occasional peppercorn. On the whole, I don't cook with spices designed to make my mouth hurt. In the same way, I don't write stories that scare me.
What am I doing in the Scary/Horror Newsletter? I want to remind you to write with nuances in your scary stories. If you like your stories gory and scary, go for it. You will find a wide audience, I just won't be a part of it. However, if you can write in a way that will scare me, momentarily, but nobody got hurt - I will enjoy it. I like that pepper corn. I won't bite into a fresh red chilli pepper if I can avoid it.
Rate your stories and use the log line below the title to warn the reader of the level of "spice" you put into your story.
