Letter from the editor

It's WdC's Birthday Bash Week!
How can Action and Adventure come from a birthday party?

If you have never been present for WdC's Birthday Bash, you will soon find that this week is wild and crazy.

Sometimes, it feels like some genres get left out. Actually, that's not true! While some things are a little late to participate in, I'll let you know where our love, Action/Adventure, played its role in this particular celebration.

"The Writer's Baker's Dozen Contest"  Open in new Window. by Diane Author Icon - This contest started with Action/Adventure as its first genre! While it is not possible to enter now, since its run has already begun, it's a great way to find some Action/Adventure stories to read. Simply go to the Day 1 entries, and just immerse yourself into the goodness.

"WDC Birthday Obstacle Course"  Open in new Window. by Diane Author Icon - What speaks "action" and "adventure" more than an obstacle course? Ok, maybe I am stretching it a little there, but it is a lot of fun. While it's not a genre-specific type activity, you can put any sort of twist on it that you might like. Have fun with it!

"The Writer's Cramp"  Open in new Window. by Sophurky Author Icon - This contest is changing genres every day. Action/Adventure hasn't come up yet this Birthday Bash Week, but it just might! Keep an eye out!

I think my point is... get involved. This week is a lot of fun, but only if you aren't afraid to jump in head-first and get your fingers a'typing, and your imaginations a'flowing.

Ask & Answer

I got a few comments from "Action/Adventure Newsletter (August 7, 2013)Open in new Window., and here they are!

Tileira Author Icon says, "David Eddings balances comedy and action (and fantasy) very well. Both the Garion and Sparhawk books are full of cheek. There's genre parody, comic irony, and then just flat-out teasing between characters; all of which slides out of the way when the heavy scenes come in. I love him to bits."

David Eddings is one of my favorite authors, actually. Before I was "allowed" to read it, I would sneak the books from the bookcase in my parents' room, and read them as quickly as I could, hiding them under the bed when I was done. I never got much into the Sparhawk series, but Garion was amazing. And yes, quite funny.

monty31802 says, "Agreed I think action and comedy can mix but it must be based on one or the other. A fine newsletter."

True! It has to be focused more one genre than the other, but a good sprinkling of other genres is a fun thing to do.

If you participate in any of the activities this week in an Action/Adventure manner, let me know by submitting to this newsletter! From a review of an Action/Adventure story, to writing one, to participating in some of the contests... it all is awesome for jumping right on into the ACTION!
