About This Newsletter

Writing.com is a great place to practice your writing, receive reviews and support from fellow members. Being a part of Writing.com's community gives you the validation you need to be the best writer you can be.

I have been an editor for the Contest & Activities Newsletter for almost two years now, and I couldn't be happier. I am lucky to be among a super group of editors who put so much effort and pride into creating informational newsletters with a flair of personal quality.

The Contest & Activities Newsletter will showcase up-to-date contests and will also mention contests that have been around awhile. Contests are not only fun, but a great way to earn gift points, receive constructive reviews and meet fellow writers. If you would like to host a contest or you want to read up on what's going on, you couldn't be in a better place -- all the tips, ideas and encouragement are right here!

There are many activities on Writing.com, such as Campfires, Interactive stories, In & Outs, Madlibs, Survey Forms, User Polls, Word Searches and whatever you, the member, would like to create and share with the community. There is so much fun stuff to talk about, so make sure you stick around!

Letter from the editor

Hi Members!

Summer is coming to a close, although it seems like it just started, at least for me. For many, Katrina's path of destruction and loss of lives in the south will certainly not let summer leave on a positive note. But, we must try to remain optimistic and supportive for all who have endured and what better way than with our writing. The written word can do wonders for all who are hopeless, depressed, lonely and don't know which way to turn.

I was just thinking, and there might already be a contest for it, but somebody or myself should host a contest in memory and in honor of the victims of Katrina. And so, I leave you with this short edition, and my support to any member who would like to host a contest in honor of Katrina victims; E-mail me and I will donate gift points toward your contest.

The following links are resources for hosting a contest, or if you need advice, please email me.

Ask & Answer

This newsletter had the Blog Ring which gave me the most fun I have had in I don't know when.

BTW, Laurencia, I am stuck here until September but still looking for a job in Maine or just New England (I am getting less picky).

Newsletter ON!!

Yeah, I thought the Blog Ring was a great idea too! I'm happy you have been enjoying it Nanette.

Good luck on the job front.

Welcome back, Laurencia. You've confirmed that I need a vacation. I was in San Francisco 10 years ago and I still remember the amazing quiet of Muir Woods! Happy you feel rejuvenated. Great newsletter!! PT

Thank you Stef! S.F. is definitely worth visiting, especially Muir Woods, so peaceful. I hope to visit San Diego some time.

Laurencia,
Welcome to California! I've lived in Santa Cruz and I hope you had the time to taste the best artichokes known to mankind and experience the Garlic Festival (garlic ice cream--WOW). California is all good and gooder, thanks for stoping by,
W.D.

billwilcox

I didn't get to taste the artichokes, but I do love them. I did see the crops for miles and miles though, wow! Plus, most of the dinner meals were seasoned with garlic, so I definitely got my dose of garlic, lol. We took the kids to Santa Cruz Boardwalk...awesome place, very clean. The roller coaters were great!

I wanted to comment on that moral to the story. I beleive it is truely impossible to think of ideas staring at a blank piece of paper or wall. The way work is created is by our surroundings. Our pieces develop differently because of what we have been through and what has affected us. That's why no two drawings, writing pieces, singing voices can be exactly the same...

I couldn't agree with you more. I have read the comment about "sitting in front of a blank piece of paper until you write" from a few well-known authors, but it was also meant to mean that sometimes your muse will not be easily stimulated (as we all know) and you can't always count on doing things to get it going, sometimes you just have to grin & bare it, and stay put in your chair so you are productive...don't get off your butt!

Thank you for the feedback!

Nice to hear about your trip to San Francisco! I grew up in the Bay Area, so it was like taking a brief trip back there reading your little piece about my old stomping grounds! Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome, and thank you for stopping by.

Great newsletter, Laurencia!
I get my best ideas when I'm riding my bike to and from work. Have you ever tried writing while cycling? It isn't easy!
Lynne.

lynk

LOL, nope I can't say that I have. I often drive my car and write notes though. Thank you for your support.

Thank you for stopping by, I always love to hear from you all. *smile*

See you October 12th!
