Is Winning Everything?
Recently I received a review for a short story I wrote several years ago. In the item, I linked the contest to which I had entered the story. (I like to link contests I'm entering for a few reasons: 1. It can help explain things like length - word count limits - or a specific prompt; 2. It's helpful to contest owners to spread word about their activity)
Anyway, in the review, the reviewer asked if my item had won or not. And you know what? I couldn't remember!
The story is one of my favorite items, actually, and I wrote it specifically for a contest, but whether or not it won isn't that important to me now. For me, being inspired to write something new is the real reward! Not that it isn't nice to win every once in a while!
It makes me think I should start adding a line after the link to the contest regarding the results. It'd even be nice to link the winner(s) if I wasn't lucky enough to be among them! What do you think?
That reviewer's question got me thinking about what I really get out of entering contests, and I came up with my top three reasons to enter a contest:
To win a prize! Winning isn't everything, but it's something, isn't it? Who doesn't love to get recognition and maybe some gps or a merit badge?
To make a name! A big part of being a successful writer is having readers recognize your name. Making a name for oneself and developing a regular readership is huge for a writer.
Practice! Practice makes perfect! The more you write (and read), the better writer you become. Always, always keep on writing!
Always keep on writing!

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (June 12, 2013)" ), discussed spicing up your contest entry.
A great newsletter indeed! Having edited some articles in the past, I loved the fact that you emphasised on correct grammar and punctuation. It can be extremely annoying if a writer makes silly mistakes. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I feel the same way!
