Divergent Paths - An Observation
This month we saw the promotion of six new Moderators: An apple a day.... , ember_rain, Dawn Embers , Creeper Of The Realm , blue jellybaby , and 🦄🏳️🌈Sapph . I'm sure they never thought they would become Mods when they joined. I never did. And yet, here I am. May I reflect on one individual journey in the wake of these promotions?
Personally, I made the decision early on to make Writing.Com a priority. WDC quickly became my second home. I got involved with several groups; I wrote stories and entered contests; I wrote reviews; I answered questions in various forums when I knew the answers, and researched the answers when I didn't; AND I developed some great friendships with other members.
All these things helped improve my writing skills. Actual and continuous writing is essential to becoming a better writer. Of course, I'm preaching to the choir ... and it's true.
But, something I'd never considered was the positive impact a few close writing friends could have on my writing abilities. Family and friends at home seldom commented on any weaknesses--hence, I must have been a great writer. Then I joined Writing.Com. Can anyone spell r-u-d-e a-w-a-k-e-n-i-n-g?
With the first in-depth review I received (within my first two weeks of joining), I was humbled. I also knew I was home. I had a lot of work ahead of me. Over these past five years, I've polished my writing skills, achieving some modicum of success in various contests and with writing reviews.
As my confidence grew, I tried other things on WDC that I never thought I'd use when I joined--I hosted a couple of auctions, judged both reviewing and writing contests, created a blog, and used many other items, such as Surveys, In & Outs, Crossword Puzzles, and Interactive Stories.
I've even had a few poems and short stories published. Of course, this was my primary reason for joining WDC in the first place. As I worked toward that goal, I discovered something on my writing journey--I loved being part of something bigger than me. I realized things about myself that I'm sure I would never have discovered had I not embraced Writing.Com.
So, why are you here? |
Check out these Newbies (I've selected folks who have filled out their Biography or something in their Bio-Block). Take a moment to review something in their Port ... or just say hi.

And from the mailbox about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "Finding Your Way Around WDC" .
From cyntp: Thank you so much for this newsletter. I do have a question. Can we see other reviews of stories we have read? I cannot find how to do that anywhere. Thanks.
Thanks for the positive stroke. To answer your query--you cannot directly access all the reviews of every story you read. Reviews given to individuals remain available to them until that item is deleted. That said, you can access reviews that are posted on the Public Review page. Go to http://www.writing.com/main/my_feedback/action/rrs, and put the story's item number in the Search box. The system will display all public reviews of that story written within the past 31 days.
From Missy ~ EnjoyingBeingAMommy : This is some really great advice for newbies, Jace. All of the Noticing Newbie newsletters are packed with a lot of great help, and I still learn new things about the site when I read them. Thanks for highlighting "Newbie Welcome Wagon" , "Newbie Help & Support Writer's Hideaway" , and the New Horizons course information for the class I'm teaching, "Invalid Item" . I'd love to see more newbies take advantage of all of the basic and more complex areas of WDC.
You're welcome, Missy. Thank you for all you do here.
From Red Barron : I really liked and enjoyed "reading" your Newsletter. I, too, deprived myself of the need to write, and yet it still remains an excessive need for me. Your Newsletter opened my eyes a lot!! I highly appreciate your honest and interesting thoughts about all of this. I will take your advice, and read all stuff, even stuff I hate or don't like as much. You also inspired me to read different genres. Thank you. I hope endless writing comes from this. I am a newbie too. Thanks big time!!! sky-blue
My pleasure. I look forward to see your progress.
From Mark Allen Mc Lemore : I joined the WdC at the beginning of this year and I am still lost... But, thanks to all the helpful people I have met here, I am learning more and more everyday, eventually I will be a pro, navigating from one place to the other, submitting a stock pile of stories and poetry, or I maybe I am going overboard here... lol. Great newsletter, I didn't know there was a suggestion box, so, as I mentioned, something new every day. Thanks.
Hmmm, can one go overboard for their writing?
From Writer Renae : This piece was done by a "Newbie". It's a mix of fiction based off my life (names have changed). This COULD turn into a longer piece, depending on the response/reviews I get.
Submitted item: "An Overdue Change to a New Life "
I hope you get helpful responses.
From canardly : Newbie here with a short but funny about my wife; thanx for the helpful info ---
Submitted item: "the Queen of Old Wives Tales"
My pleasure. |
