Keep Active

Words of wisdom: Use it or lose it.

Writing, just as any skill, improves with practice. And it also goes away when it's not practiced. As a beginning writer in school, we get instructions on spelling, syntax, grammar, and even some encouragement to let our creativity run wild in stories. Throughout the years, more and more of our raw imagination gets stifled by critique, self-doubt, the need to earn a paycheck, being tired, or other hobbies. Sure, over the years of going to school, those spelling and grammar lessons did stick somewhat and we're able to write the needed things in life and get by.

At some point in life, writing comes back. It hits us with a tsunami of images, words, sentences, adventures, poems ... the inner writer screams to be let out. So we sit down and write. Doubt and critique can't touch us no more. We're wizards of writing, the words flow and everything is just great until we come to Writing.Com and find out: our stories and poems are okay to an audience, but there is something missing to make it great.

The diligent new Writing.Com member reads the reviews and sends reviews. Skills improve. Stories and poems become great. First successes in contests here on Writing.Com set in. Honorable mention, third place, second place, a first place winning entry with a trophy on it! It was a lot of work, but it's so sweet to be here.

Now's not the time to rest. Keep writing. Keep reviewing. Keep entering into contests. You must keep writing no matter what. If the bills pile up in front of the computer screen, move them out of the way. Maybe on top of the printer is a good place. If your car broke down - well that's actually perfect since you've got a good reason to stay put and write. After all, the best Country songs are about the truck that broke down.

Today's message is: keep writing. If you don't win in any contest and when everybody tells you it's no good, that only means one thing: you shouldn't have taken that break from writing.

Write on!

In response to my last newsletter "S. M. A. R. T.Open in new Window. I got the following replies:

Welcome to Writing.Com. I'm glad the listed contests were useful to you.

Sum1's Home Author Icon wrote: Giselle,
I loved the you use the acronym S.M.A.R.T. in this week's newsletter. In my career, we've used that exact acronym in defining learning goals in our courses. Without setting using that acronym, we have no way of knowing how well we are getting across to the students! Again, loved seeing it!

:-d Thank you! This praise made me smile.

That's a lucky predicament to be in to have so many great entries. If you can swing it, do pick a first place winner, but give all of them a token of your appreciation.
