Translating Life into Action
This newsletter details how to use the events in one's lie as a muse for their Action/Adventure writing.
Let's face it. Rarely do our lives get as exciting as those within our books! Sometimes things pop up - good or bad - that feel like they belong on the pages of the book, but for the most part, our lives are pretty tame in comparison.
However! That does not mean that we can't use our lives within our books - as symbolism. Putting our lives STRAIGHT in wouldn't work, but we can twist it into something more interesting. Let me show you a few examples:
Loss of a Job - It is an unpleasant experience in life to lose a job. Our heroes often face unpleasant experiences. This can be shown in books in many ways.
Loss of Powers
Loss of Support (monetary, person, or emotional)
Loss of Sense of Comfort
Loss of Sense of Balance
Loss of Sense of Safety
Addition to the Family - Whether this be of the human type in the form of a bundle of joy, or the animal type with a new pet in the family.
New Sidekick
New Superpower
New Gadget
New Love Connection
Same-ole, Same-ole - Do you feel like you're doing the same thing every single day? This can even be used in your stories!
Character stuck in a time loop of an hour, day, month, etc.
Character rescuing the same person every day (and subsequently having many, many different reasons why this may be going on)
Character getting bored of their daily routine, and branching out in some wild way.
I hope you consider using your every day experiences to spice up some of your stories in interesting ways! |

Last month's question asked about favorite Action/Adventure writers. I have a response that I'd like to share!
BIG BAD WOLF is Howling said, "I recommend Brian Jacques's Redwall series- you can't go wrong with those mice. Same with Gordon R. Dickson's Dragon Knight series- When a math teaching assistant ends up in a world with dragons, knights, and talking wolves, you wonder what will happen. Then there's Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern- You hope that those brave men and women, and their dragon partners, can save their world."
I have heard good things about the Redwall series, though I have never read it myself. Maybe I ought to pick it up.
This Week's Question
Remember to leave your answer in the small box right below this section, and I'll be sure to get it in the next newsletter.
So, for this week, let's keep with the topic of the newsletter - what regular life-happening might you use in your next story, and how would you portray it there? |
