Coming Back

Last weekend I ran my first race of the season, a 5k which benefited St. Jude's Children's Hospital, and it was my first race since the Fall. I tend to take time off during the Winter, with just a short run here and there to try to keep in shape. It can be tough getting back into the swing of things, but it's also so rewarding!

The same can be said for writing, can't it? We all have times where we have to take a break for various reasons. It can be difficult sometimes to get back into writing after a break. How can we make it easier? Personally, I approach it the same as when I come back to running after taking off a season:

1. Small bursts. After not running for a few months, if I try to go out and run miles upon miles, I'll risk injuring myself. My muscles aren't ready for too much. In writing, I'll try writing shorter pieces, even just small scenes or character sketches. I think short writing contests (like "The Writer's CrampOpen in new Window. and "Daily Flash Fiction ChallengeOpen in new Window.) are great exercises for flexing your creative muscles!

2.Get creative. Try some fun & challenging activities, like Mad Libs, In & Outs and Quizzes to find inspiration! When I come back to running, it's more fun if I mix up long runs with shorter intervals, too. Keep it interesting, and you're more likely to stick with it!

3. Focus on one thing at a time. If I start running every day after taking off too much time, I also risk injury. Taking it slow and focusing on a slow increase is the smartest approach when it comes to running, and it can work for writing, too! Trying to do too much at once can bring disappointment and an overwhelming feeling. Focus on one contest or activity at a time until you get back fully!

Ultimately, you know yourself best. You know what will motivate you and how you can grow. For some, it's daily writing, and for others, it's putting aside time every so often. You know what inspires you, so use that knowledge to get yourself back into a writing routine!

Always keep on writing!
