Letter from the editor

Hallo folks!

I'm feeling really happy as I write this.

But let me start at the beginning. In the last week of January this year, some folks who had attended a writing workshop decided to meet on a regular basis, and discuss writing-related topics. The venue? A second-hand bookshop, where we sat on the floor on a carpet amid bookshelves and stacked-up books.

Our first meeting saw a dozen people attending, reading from their favourite books or original work, and doing some on-the-spot writing. We decided that the topic for the following meeting, in the second week of February, was to be 'Imagery and Relevance'.

The second meeting saw five people, all of whom had 'prepared' for the session by choosing extracts from books to read aloud and analyse. The third meeting, on 'character', had three of the regulars and three browsers who joined in discussing some intriguing literary characters.

During all the three meetings, I came across books that I wouldn't have known of otherwise, and genres that I'm not familiar with.

I've just returned from the fourth meeting.

We were just the three regulars - including the owner of the bookshop, who is obliged to be there because it's his place! So, we ditched our original plan ('tell us why your favourite book is your favourite book') and brainstormed about how we could get more people in - either for the writers' meet, or just in to the store in general. The answer? "Do events, especially readings for children". We decided to get right to it, and picked Dr. Seuss's 'Green Eggs and Ham' off the shelf, to rehearse for a future reading session. I happened to have my little camera with me, good for shooting your basic video.

Anu (the girl who attends regularly) and I read, while Ravi (the owner of the bookshop) took a video. It turned out pretty well, and we went on to read PD Eastman's 'The Best Nest'. Now, all we needed was to get the word out and ask parents if they'd send their kids for storytelling sessions.

Just as we were planning this - who should walk in to the bookshop but three kids, followed by their parents!

We pounced.

"Would you like to listen to a story?" They were delighted, and guffawed their way through 'Green Eggs and Ham' as Anu and I read it aloud.

Of course they clamoured for another - and then, the little girl had an idea. "We'll have another, but this time, we'll read it to you."

It was our turn to chuckle our way through 'The Bears' Picnic' by Stan and Jan Berenstain, as three of them took on the roles of father bear, child bear and mother bear, and brought them to life. Not having had the luxury of rehearsal, they sometimes didn't know which character was talking. The girl was the quickest to figure it out, and if she found the 'wrong' brother had been narrating, she clamped a hand on his mouth and motioned to the other one to take over.

We told the family that we had just hit upon the idea of readings for children, and that their arrival at the bookshop was a blessing for us - to immediately know how well our idea worked, and to get an added input - that kids could read aloud to us in turn, too!

They said they'd just decided on a weekend outing to the bookshop, and they were glad they had. The parents had visited the place often before, they now wanted to share it with their children and had brought them for the first time today.

Co-incidence? A blessing!

I'm grinning from ear to ear, and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside!

Thanks for listening
Sonali

What a great reflection. I hope you can see well now. It's amazing and so reassuring to know that the world we know as a healthy person to be "bad" is not so bad when we fall sick or hit a wall! Blessings, Restless Soul

Wow! That's what I call true friends and loving family. That's very uplifting to hear. Often times people don't take the time and do these kinds of things. It's good to know there are people in the world like this still.

It looks like you're on your way to healing up nicely. Congratulations on that and I know soon things will be "looking" much better for you.
