Letter from the editor

Just a story this time:

My friend, R., was exiting the freeway late one night when he noticed a car parked on the side of the offramp. It was a black car, and none of its lights were on. R. figured the car probably had an electrical problem, since he’d dealt with problems like that with his car before. He pulled off to the other side of the offramp and called to the guy in the car to see if he needed any help. The guy couldn’t hear him, and so he ran across to the side of the ramp R. was on to see what he was trying to say.

Not more than a minute later, a huge pickup truck came barreling down the offramp. As it went, it veered off to the side and smashed into the black car, completely wrecking it. If R. hadn’t parked across the way and called to the guy in trouble, then that guy would now be dead. Instead, R. gave him use of his cell phone and a ride to his home, which was over a 40 minute drive away.

R. is the kind of person that goes out his way to help others, as evidenced by giving that guy a ride home that was completely out of R.’s way. But the point is, just by offering to help a person stranded on the side of the road, R. ended up saving someone’s life. Just by being there.

So next time you get the chance to offer someone a little help, maybe you should. You could have just been put in the right place in the right time. Just something to think about.
