Letter from the editor

You stop to fix your husband’s bow tie on his tuxedo when you hear a piercing scream. The other guests are pointing toward the impressive stairway cascading down the middle of the ship’s lobby. Sprawled out on the stairs is a white-suited man, with a bright red stain spreading down his white shirt. You turn to your husband and smile. “It’s starting,” you whisper, and peek into your handbag at your character packet. “Let’s go see what’s happening!”

A strange reaction to a murder? No, just a common reaction during a Murder Mystery Cruise.

For all you mystery fans, there is a way to combine a vacation and a good mystery all in one. Professional acting companies offer many ways to enjoy murder and fine champagne all in the same night.

Keith and Margo’s Murder Mystery company offers murder dinners, weekends, trains and cruises all over the USA and Canada. The current mystery cruise leaves from California and sails to the Mexican Riviera with regular guests and a troupe of professional actors, directors, writers and producers. The tradition amenities of a luxury cruise are offered on the Holland America including gourmet food, entertainment, and top class service. But, in addition to the standard cruise, Mystery cruise guests can participate in the solving of a murder mystery!Along with the real passengers are the actors. Part of the fun on the cruise is to guess who is an actor, and who is a regular Joe. At the end of the cruise the guests submit a solution and the ‘detective’ solves the crime.

Murder By Design based in the UK will set up murder events to order, set in any era from the 1920's to the present. They will perform interactive murder mysteries for small parties or a whole production for a large group. Imagine hiring the troupe for your next birthday party!

Another murder vacation opportunity is actually one of the oldest. Bed and Breakfast Inns have offered these mysterious events for many years. Some, like the ones held at Twin Oakes Inn on Martha’s Vineyard send the Inn guests clues at the Inn, which the guests need to investigate on various parts of the Island. Other Inns provide the guests with a “character packet” which may include character descriptions, possible lines, and the role the guest is taking for the weekend. Occasionally guests will even rent costumes to really get into characters. Guests could be the victim or the murderer, or an innocent bystander; but everyone is the detective!

If participating in a Murder Mystery vacation sounds like fun to you, here is a small list of links for you to look at. If nothing tickles your murder bone, why not host one of your own at your house?

I've read many books that didn't get interesting until a couple of chapters along and each time, I was glad I had read the book despite the slow beginning. As for this article, it has reminded me how much I'd like to write reviews myself whether or not I get paid for them. Tell me though, does the review have to cover only the books that interest you?
I would only review books that interest you or you would be bored and not give the book the review it deserves. If I reviewed a western book, I am sure it wouldn't reflect the true spirit of the western genre and wouldn't give readers of that genre much to go by.

LOL for the ten minute ten page method of tossing a book. Will try this advise.

Why waste your time with poor writing or with something you don't like? Life is too short.

Great newsletter, Schip! I like reviewing on Amazon.com as well, but I was surprised at how difficult it was when I first started. You give a lot of good tips here .
Thank you. I love writing these newsletters and getting feedback. Any issues you want to discuss, please let me or one of the other editors.
