The Couple Who Games Together. . . Stays Together

Let's talk about role-playing. No, not that kind of role-playing! *Wink* This kind of role-playing is (mostly) PG-13, I promise.

It goes without saying that successful couples need to have something in common, a hobby or interest that they can talk about with each other. Maybe they like the same sports team, or they're both writers, or just like vegging out on the couch together. At the end of the workday, or on weekends, it's important to have some fun together to relieve the stress. I've heard it said many times that the couple who plays together, stays together.

I want to take that theory a step farther and say that a couple who games together stays together. From video games to role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, Settlers of Catan, and various board games, I known many couples who strengthen their relationships by gaming together.

Jimmy and Amanda, two D&D playing acquaintances of mine, met as members of a gaming group in college, and now are married and play together almost every Sunday. There's another couple in the group, too. Shelly Mazzonable, author of Everything I Need to Know I Learned from Dungeons and Dragons met her now-husband while an employee of Wizards of the Coast. He was an active gamer; she quickly became one.

One of the most accessible ways for couples to game together is through video games. I know many women who play video games. Unlike with role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, video games are losing their reputation of being a "man's only" hobby. There is a video game out there for everybody. In my opinion, they can be a great way to have some fun and healthy competition with your partner.

Just with any other hobby, I'd like to emphasize that gaming isn't for everyone. For every man I know who plays D&D with his wife or girlfriend, I know two who have significant others who just don't like the game.

In my upcoming NaNo novel, a teenage girls gets into D&D, but is held back by her new boyfriend, who has some misconceptions about the game. Imagine the conflicts that can come up in your writing when a couple doesn't agree on a game or hobby! Maybe they have apposing favorite football teams, or one of them spends so much time with a new hobby that the other begins to feel slighted. How does that change their relationship? Is it possible for a couple who doesn't play together to stay together?

Ask & Answer

Thanks to everyone who wrote in about my last newsletter on finding love online!

Crys, in your newsletter this week, you asked about other couples who met here.. My wife Kenzie Author IconMail Icon and I met here on Writing.Com, and have been married now for what will be 7 years this coming February. -Incurable Romantic Author IconMail Icon

You said a few very true things here. I've been registered on some online dating sites, but nothing really came out of it, some encounters were quite creepy.

So I'm on the look the old-fashioned way again. I've met all my former boyfriends in real-life as well. Who knows when I'll run into the right one? (If it happens here, however, I wouldn't be too sad. )

Thank you for featuring "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. in your NL, Crys. However, I'm wondering why, as it's so not about online relationships; maybe because it's just a beautiful snapshot in time? -Olivia's Grincherella Author IconMail Icon

-Indeed! I tried hard to find stories about online relationships that in my opinion didn't promote stereotypes, but it was a real challenge. Maybe our readers could suggest some good stories to be featured in a future newsletter?
