The "The Writer's Cramp" has been around since 2002. With a current thread dating back to 2008, this contest has well withstood the sands of time. Lets look at some of the reasons this has the longevity it does, and how you too can host an activity with such success.
CHOOSING THE PROPER PROMPT.
With a new prompt each day, this contest has had its shares of hits and misses. What determines whether a prompt is a hit or a miss? Is it the time of day you post the prompt; the length of time between prompts; the originality, or the variety? For me all prompts are a hit, the only way there could be a miss, in my opinion, is if nobody decides to enter, and then it is not the fault of the prompt. To me, all prompts are good, but not all prompts will inspire writers. Finding a prompt that inspires the muse to create is often a shot in the dark. Not everyone is inspired by the same thing so I believe that finding so many prompts to inspire a variety of artists, is indeed a gift.
CONSISTENCY
Being consistent with times, dates, rules and regulations, makes it easy on the contest entrants. Many have returned simply because of this fact. Having set guidelines for contest entries and entrants, makes for familiarity for those that return time after time. With over 7500 posts to date, ranging from entrants to new prompts, this is a consistent forum of creative writing.
JUDGING
A plethora of judges who are dedicated and true to the contest makes it easy for this to continue on. There is also availability for guest judges to appear. If you do not have someone judging on a consistent time schedule, there are delays, which could deter further entrants.
PRIZES
The prizes are consistent and reasonable. There is a set prize for each and every day. It doesn't change. The prize is large enough to be an alluring factor in drawing contestant entries, and small enough to be manageable for the host of the activity. Keeping within your own budget for this type of a prize is important.
CHALLENGE
I challenge each of you reading this to stop by during the month of October, at least once, if not more, and enter this amazing contest. I would love to hear about your experience afterward.
