If you open up your action scene with, um, action, keep the following in mind:
No confusion - No matter what action your protagonist exhibits, make sure readers can identify it right off the bat.
Peak their curiosity - why is the protagonist carrying a knife in one and an box of Oreo double stuffs in the other while running down the street screaming, "Warthogs and fish hooks." Readers have questions. Questions keep readers focused on your work, not their text messages or Nat Geo TV.
If you decide to open up your action scene with foreshadowing, consider these tips:
Keep your foreshadowing to a minimum. Provide only information critical for the set up. If you go overboard setting up the reader you run the risk of losing him or her to other activities, like flossing teeth or trimming fingernails.
Remember, your action scenes don't have to have fire, threat of death, or world ending concrescences. Your scenes do need to have an urgency requiring the protagonist to make quick decisions based on emotion or passion, or driven by character. |
