Letter from the editor

Happy Birthday - 1

Since the entire site is celebrating WDC's 10th Birthday this week, we'll join the fun for this week's Comedy Newsletter. Now, as you know from last month's issue about my <cough cough> 50th Birthday, I don't normally find birthdays amusing. But that's only my own birthdays -- other people's (or web sites) birthdays are just fine! *Laugh*

One of the things I like to do for birthdays, especially when I am low on cash, is write them something as a gift. It might be a sappy poem about how much I love them (appropriate for parent, spouse, child), or it might be a letter to them about how special they are in my life and how much they mean to me (appropriate for a friend, teacher, parent). Neither of those are terribly funny, unless the poem is a limerick or the letter includes embarrassing stories about the birthday gal/guy.

A while back I was asked to give a speech at a "milestone" birthday party (translation: a birthday party for a very old person), and was instructed to include events from history that occurred on the same day this person was born. I, of course, decided to make it funny (since who wants to listen to a boring speech at a fun party?), and did some research on that particular day in history. Much to my disappointment, humorous things did not occur on that person's special day, so I ended up expanding to include events from the entire year of her birth (it was a milestone birthday, after all), the wackier the better. So let's find out what happened on or around the birthday of WDC, shall we?

We'll start with finding out what else happened in the world on Sept. 1, 2000, the same day WDC was born ... I'm sure it will be something interesting, exciting, newsworthy, history making, and very interesting -- what else would we expect on such a special day, right?!

So, let's see ....

<GOOGLE SEARCH September 1, 2000 this day in history>

*Star* September 1, 2000: The FBI arrest Mark Jakob who has perpetuated a new type of financial fraud via the Internet. Mark Jakob had put out a fake press release claiming that the Emulex company's chief executive had resigned and that it had inflated its previous earnings. The result was a drop in stock value of 60% knocking $2.5bn off Emulex market capitalization value.

Hmm, that's not good, nor is it funny. Let's see what else we can find out there .... maybe something better happened on Sept. 1 from another year? Let's see .... um, err, not so much. Earthquake in Japan (1923), Germany invades Poland (1939), Hurricane Carol (1954) ... okay this is not looking so good. Wait, here's something better -- in 1972, Bobby Fischer became the World Chess Champ, and in 1989, the Lexus was born! That's much better. But still, not funny. Let's expand our search to include the entire year of 2000.

<GOOGLE SEARCH: 2000 history>

Okay, now we're cooking ...

In September, 2000:
*Star* The musical Cats closes on Broadway. Wait, I thought their slogan was "now and forever at the Winter Garden Theater ..." ?? I guess "forever" was the year 2000, eh?

*Star* Sammy Sosa becomes the second player to hit 50 or more home runs in three consecutive years, joining Mark McGwire -- funny now because of the 'roid scandal. Okay, not funny ... pathetic. Moving on.

Elsewhere during the year 2000:
*Star* Reality TV Shows "Big Brother" and "Survivor" made their debuts in 2000 -- so WDC is in good company (or not, depending if you like those shows or not).

*Star* It was a leap year, and February 29 always amuses me (and always looks wrong on calendars).

*Star* George Dubya Bush was "elected" President of the US (more tragic than funny -- but, Dubya himself, very funny). Dick Cheney, not so funny -- in fact, scary as hell. *Laugh*

*Star* WHASSUP?!?! Budweiser beer commercials won the advertising industry's most prestigious award, sparked hundreds of hilarious parodies, and left us with the most overused saying of the year (which has since been replaced, years later, with "That's what she said").

*Star* And even though the Dot Com Bubble Burst and thousands of DotComs went bust in 2000 -- it paved the way for WDC to emerge as a new, successful, popular writing site!

Okay well, that was sort of a bust, sorry about that. But I promise, if you choose ANY other year besides 2000, I'm sure some funny stuff happened and you'll be the hit of the party! *Bigsmile*

Thanks for featuring my poem in your Newsletter. I hope you'll have a great 50th birthday. I'm still recovering from the party for my 60th, though maybe I never will! You're right, you have to laugh at growing older.

Thanks so much, I did have a great birthday, and no one had to call 911 when I blew out the candles on my cake! *Laugh*

Really funny stuff on turning fifty, Sophy. Don't let anyone kid ya, the fifties aren't that great. Like Mickey Mantle said--If i'd known I was going to live this long I would've taken better care of my self.

*Laugh*Oh, Sophy, don't sweat the fifties -- unless of course it's due to menopause, then, well, you'll probably be keeping the windows open in mid-winter. Just think about staying young and healthy.

Let's see, there was that Newsletter about exercise you wrote a while back. It had something to do with potato sacks? *Rolleyes*

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY, KIDDO!!!
