Letter from the editor

The inspiration for most of my writing comes from day to day life. I don’t seem to be able to dream up a whole new world full of magical and mystical creatures, or to send chills down my reader’s spines by coming up with some truly scary prose.

And day to day life can be rather amusing. If I don’t have at least a couple of good giggles during my waking hours, something is probably wrong. The playfulness of my felines is always entertaining to watch, and I have a rather unusual working environment – at least in my opinion.

I have worked in some places in the past that look pretty good on a Curriculum Vitae; a Tax Court, Ministries, Social Services. Dry jobs, so to say, in the administrative and secretarial field. But not even my time in the Police Force could have prepared me for my current position...

If someone were to ask me what I do for a living, I would have to ponder. Job description? Well, administrator, secretary, map-reader, engineer… rabbit catcher, dog minder, child entertainer, councillor… I can even be the whole sales department if you ask me to. Yes, I can do it all.

Sounds like being a mom, does it not? Except, I don’t have children and do work in an actual business. The office is situated in a building owned by my employer and she and several others live there, too. So on a standard working day I am surrounded by quite a few people, a dog, a variety of kids, and occasionally an escape artist rabbit that thinks he is a chicken (though according to the latest update, he now seems to have fancies towards being a greyhound – not the wisest choice for a bunny).

Imagine being on the phone, not a wireless one either, trying to explain something serious to a high-up medical type of person with a distinct lack of humour. The door opens and in come several kids wanting to play, needing paper, needing their shoes tied, or fully expecting you to spin around on the office chair for their amusement. Try to keep the laughter from your voice and still make sense to the person on the other end of the phone line. I dare you.

I love my job. It makes every day life a lot of fun.

I hope that your days are as filled with giggles and inspiration as mine tend to be!
