So, Newbies...Here you are. You've figured out how to post files in your portfolio or 'port.' You've thrown your work into the void (so to speak) and now you are sitting there. Waiting. Will someone read my work? Will they like it? Will others think it is any good?
One of the best ways to get 'noticed' and have folks visit your port is to review the writing of others. So what if you're a newbie? Don't ever let that stop you from reviewing! Jump in, and react to what you are reading. Let the author know what you think and why. Also, I'd suggest stating that you are new to the site and would appreciate a visit to your port.
Now you should start getting some reviews and emails!
Another thing, oft stated in this newsletter is to try your hand at some of the activities and contests.
Ah, but you have questions. You need help. There are a wide variety of forums where you can get help, Or ask a mod! (any blue case.) We are pretty good at answering questions or forwarding you on to where the answers would be.
Here are some useful places to visit:
More are located under 'Site Navigation' then under 'Writing Resources' on the upper left side of the page.
How did I make that link? It is called a 'bitem' link. Posting items in contests almost always requires items be linked as a bitem. The number is the ID number of your specific piece and is located to the immediate left of the item in your port. You create a bitem link by typing the following WITHOUT SPACES.
For example, {bitem : 958083}
gives you this:
.
Under 'site tools' are more helpful items including how to have your work show up in different fonts, colors or typefaces. (called WritingM) Useful. You can use several emoticons as well and it shows you how to do it.
Click on different things and go exploring. This is an adventure and Writing.com has so much to offer! It may look a little overwhelming at first, but soon you'll be navigating the site easily.
Have you noticed the envelope and the pointing finger by a member's name and portfolio? The envelope is a shortcut to email them; the finger lets you create a favorite out of that author. You can find them as well at the top right of any item. This will (in effect) let you bookmark that item in a favorites list for easy finding in the future.
Hopefully some of these ideas will help in navigation around WDC.
The most important thing is that this is an awesome site with much to offer writers. So jump in, join in and have fun! Remember--everyone here was a newbie once upon a time!

I'm a guest editor this week, so I have no feedback to offer. If what I wrote is helpful, let me know! I picked the specifics from emails I've received of late so I'm guessing they are common newbie questions.
Newbie challenge: Write a poem or short story with one or more of the following prompts. Then post it in your port and send me the bitem link in an email. (fyndorian@writing.com) All those who submit will get a review and gps. Best one gets a merit badge!
Prompts:
1. being a stranger
2. being a beginner at something
3. trying something new
4. embarking on a new adventure
Good luck and have fun with it!
