Greetings,
My last visit here, we explored the act of giving thanks for our blessings and the act of giving itself. Recently, I saw a facebook entry decrying the call to offer aid to the victims of the Haitian earthquakes. The writer said there was enough need in his own backyard, his neighbor losing his house due to job 'restructuring.' But his neighbor's kids aren't afraid to sleep in the house, choosing to bed down in the dirt under the night sky thaat is less likely to bury them in an aftershock.
Giving just a little means so much to those left homeless and constantly afraid. A simple act of kindness is returned a thousandfold in hope. When last we met on these pages, we explored the idea of paying it forward; of actively reaching out to someone with a thoughtful act or words. Giving thanks is similar. The realization that you feel grateful for something, that you want to say 'thank you,' reaches outside the mundane and creates energy that then renews itself, and a spark of something within you. Think about it, when you say 'thank you,' and mean it, don't you generally smile and maybe stand or sit a little straighter and maybe notice that things appear a bit brighter and sounds more clear for awhile. That's the energy you've harnessed interacting with your surroundings. Whether you thank a person, a deity or deities, or the cardinal flying away, notice the feeling you have when you say or think those simple words, 'thank you.'
Give thanks for the ability to offer help, to offer a hand to the neighbor who needs comfort or the children who need the hope of one day not being afraid to sleep indoors. Express your thanks to others for their kind acts or words. Each is a gift. Remember the thank you notes we had to write as kids. Send a note or email or call or text to thank someone for a gift or a kindness shown. You will feel the energy grow. Express your thanks to your deity or dieties or to the universe, as is your tradition for the day that is becoming or the one that has passed. Again, you will feel the energy.
•True giving requires some sacrifice on the part of the giver.
•True giving must show respect, and not condescension, toward the recipient.
•With true giving, we are grateful to the recipient for making the act of giving possible.
The act of giving ~ be it a deed of kindness, a word of thanks, or a prayer for healing ~ evokes positive energy in return. Think about it - don't you feel good when you give of yourself. It doesn't have to be a lot ~ it can be a simple smile. It doesn't have to be a large sum of money. A local TV station brought a couple of buses to their lot and the Red Cross provided a list of immediate necessities for the victims of the Haitian earthquakes. Within two hours the buses were filled with boxes of cotton swabs, diapers, bottled water, Q-tips, alcohol (among the items noted). Some boxes were brought by stores and companies, but a package of Pampers was dropped off by a young couple who, instead of buying one package for their baby, bought two.
Look about you and see where the need exists and where you can be a healing force to fill that need ~ whether a dollar for the Red Cross Haiti fund, or a package of Pampers, each will satisfy a need and return the energy you have expended in the very joy of giving.
Until we next meet,
Brightest Blessings,
Kate
