Romance is all about signals. Sending them, receiving them, interpreting them. Even when there is verbal communication, it goes hand-in-hand with signals (to hopefully end up in the couple going hand-in-hand with each other! )
Where the 'right' signals are sent and interpreted correctly, you have a happily ever after. Where there's a mix-up in encoding or decoding the signals, you have funny vibes, misunderstandings and an unhappily-ever-after.
While the couple is sending signals to each other, the writer is sending signals to the reader. The reader is constantly reading between the lines, to pick up sub-text, things the writer hasn't said but has hinted at.
Here are a few examples, from WDC authors:
Their relationship, the conflict:
From "Follow His Heart" by ♥noVember tHiNg♥
The problem was, Victoria was not the author of the treatise she was being honored for writing.
It was written by her secretary, Maggie O'Brien, and Sean knew it.
To me, the most powerful words here are "and Sean knew it." There's so much that the reader can interpret. I immediately added 'and he disapproved' in my mind. The whole conflict seemed to be contained in these words.

The protagonist:
From: "I Never Saw It Coming" by The StoryMistress
Now I'm a huge jewelry fan, but only of jewelry that I can afford.
Tells you a couple of key things about her character -- she likes pretty things, enjoys buying them, but won't over-indulge. Also makes you wonder why she's bringing this point up at all, is jewelry she can't afford going to be important here? Why? Because of whom?
*********
The setting:
From: "Invalid Item" by writemanna
Sky sat under a green umbrella on the back porch, as she sipped pink lemonade and leaned back on the green iron garden-chair.
A house by someone who has an eye for detail - 'green' umbrella, 'green' chair. Somewhat luxurious?

So, what vibes is your character sending out to her/his love-interest? What vibes are you, the writer, sending out to your reader? Watch those subtle signals as you pen your words!
Thanks for listening!

A big thank you to those who responded to "Romance/Love Newsletter (November 18, 2009)"

This newsletter really got me thinking about the dynamics within my own relationship with my fiance. We've been together for four years and are still very much in love. Many people comment on how we are meant to be together and I think they are right. I know that in a situation such as the ones you described in 'The Amazing Race', my fiance would be majorly encouraging and caring for me - and I would probably be screaming at him to "Hurry up and stop being such a girl!". Heh heh, such is the attraction of opposites...
Well, whatever works for you ... ! Thanks for writing in!

I absolutely enjoyed this Newsletter! How very true about relationships... Although, I haven't been in a love relationship before... And not really planning to be in one any time soon... I really think the message rings true based on what I see with my friends and their special someones!! Thank you for a very interesting Romance Newsletter.

When you do have a love relationship of your own, you'll find it's a different cup of tea than anything else your friends went through! Good luck! And a very happy WDC Birthday to you! |
