One of my favorite quotes about horror was written by Douglas Winter who stated, "Horror is not a genre, like the mystery or science fiction or the western. It is not a kind of fiction, meant to be confined to the ghetto of a special shelf in libraries or bookstores. Horror is an emotion."
I've long been a fan of horror stories and the emotion they elicit. The good ones terrify me, but draw me in so completely that I could no sooner put the book down than rip off my own arm. I read these tales in bed, surrounded by pillows on all sides and hunched under the covers to shield myself from the specters that might be lingering in the vicinity of the room. Fearing they will be drawn to the scent of fear, I take breaks from the book as needed, yet cannot move away.
The best horror tales are those that are completely unexpected. My favorite authors can take the ordinary and make it horrifying. These authors veer away from the easy route of splashing blood and gore around and labeling it horror. Instead, they focus on the emotions they can draw out of their reader. The challenge of bringing horror to an ordinary moment is far greater than the momentary fear caused by the expected.
There are several authors on the site that are up to this challenge and to tempt them out of hiding, I'm reopening "Invalid Item" for a couple of weeks. If you're a horror writer, take up the challenge and write a story that gives the readers a chill and leaves them with an uneasy feeling. If you're a horror reader, enjoy the entries, I know I will.
Hiding under the covers,
Diane
