"When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than any talent for abstract, positive thinking."
~~Albert Einstein
"Without this playing with fantasy no creative work has ever yet come to birth. The debt we owe to the play of imagination is incalculable."~~Carl Jung

Fantasy. The web of dreams spun on moonlit nights when once we came to the edge of our reality and leapt fearlessly into that which existed in naught but imagination.
Surely fantasy springs from that deep and fathomless well of our imaginations, yet what makes something a fantasy rather than a reality? Fantasy is that misty place where reality and imagination overlap. There are no boundaries to that mystical place except for those which we place upon them.
Fantasy can co-exist along side of reality: It is all simply a matter of one's perspective and how one chooses, as a writer, to project it.
Remember the worlds you created as a child? The games of 'Let's pretend' that took over Saturday afternoons were fantasies we created complete with swords or arrows, the good guys and the bad, the knights and the generals. When parents would call us to bed as twilight deepened into dark and we literally had to shake off being the king and remember that we were merely seven or eight was that gauzy wall we crossed between. As a child, fantasy and reality walked with us hand in hand.
Some authors create entire realms, and plopping us down in the middle, let us follow the characters until the last page is turned and we surface from our adventure. Some authors let overlap the edges and in the ripple we find hints, merest of whispers of the fantastic should we choose to perceiveit.
Fantasy may encompass trolls or dragon riders, faeries or giants, alien creatures or far flung civilizations. Then again, fantasy may be that inner magic that transforms a weary soul or leads us to a realization of some import. It can be that inner voice telling us to go a certain way or that gut feeling that makes us change plans.
Fantasy is all around us. It is there when we find that lost item at a most opportune time. It is there, wafting around us on those very special days we long remember.
It is simply matter of sharpening our inner eye which allows us to see the infinite and fantastical possibilities.
