Right now, I am rewriting a science fiction novel containing creatures usually considered fantasy beast rather then science fiction creatures. The creatures I am using come from the methodical traditions of various cultures. The setting is science fiction because it takes place on an Earth colony placed on a planet orbiting a star near the edge of the Milky Way.
Rewriting this novel started me wondering how other fantasy and science fiction authors come up with the creatures inhabiting their worlds. I personally like to come up with my own monsters or use mythological creatures. Because I suspect this is how one of my favorite fantasy authors, H. P. Lovecraft, came up with the creatures that inhabited his worlds. However, each author has his or her own method of creating a creature and a setting for that creature.
What type of creatures inhabits your fantasy and science fiction worlds? Do your creatures live in strictly fantasy or science fiction setting? Do your creatures inhabit a mixed setting? How do you go about creating them? Do you get them from myth and folklore? Do you make the creatures yourself? Do you use a combination of these methods? Do you use monsters you encounter in your dreams?
