Halloween is just around the corner! It's time to start editing some of your older scary / horror items and get them ready for submission to contests or publication. There are a lot of Halloween contests on this site and you should be prepared. Think about all the great classic characters for your stories, like vampire, mummies, witches, goblins, zombies, ghosts and more!
What can be more fun than reading some spooky poems in the dark with a flashlight held to your chin? Or when camping in the woods?
I like to read vampire and ghost stories year 'round. I especially like the ones that come out near the holidays. Many e-publishers will accept shorts that feature holidays like a vampire Christmas. I encourage you, if you're thinking about writing for a contest, to look for a twist or a mix on genres. It will put your story in the forefront of the judge's mind since it's not a typical write.
Remember to check your grammar and spelling before submitting to contests. Putting your best foot forward is a good habit and makes it much easier for a judge to read. With so many entries, you want to be sure your story isn't eliminated at the end of the first paragraph. Also, be sure to read the contest rules. Word counts are often requested. It also helps to link back to the contest at the end of the story. It will help you remember later one what contest it was written for and helps advertise for the person holding the contest.
Good luck and happy haunting!

Excerpt: Sadie squeezed her eyes shut. Her lids pressed together hard enough to cause white spots to form in the darkness. “Go away,” she whispered.

Excerpt: I’d almost forgotten the taste of warm ham washed down with a bottle of white wine, or the comfort of collapsing onto a soft bed after too much of either. Even so, only a very lucrative contract could have dragged me all the way to the obscure back roads of Geldonwood. I navigated the forest trails with only the clothes on my back for comfort and an ornate silver dagger with a ruby in the pommel, which was sheathed at my hip.

Excerpt: I first noticed the strange back pains, on my twelfth birthday, when Aunt Ithea came to visit. It began with a sharp tingling sensation just under my shoulder blades and gradually grew to a pesky agitation in my skin.

Excerpt: Annie sat quietly reading her book while Jeffery and his golden retriever, Max played Frisbee. Brenda and Rick sat swooning. Tracy was earnestly skipping flat stones across the water. And Lisa was dancing to music from their radio. After a time, all gathered around the fire and casual conversations began.

Excerpt: Brodie’s eyes snapped open. A shrill scream rushing from her lips as she sprang up in bed gasping for air, her body and bedding damp with perspiration. She sucked in a strangled breath and, without thinking, flung back the sheet, jumped off the bed and ran for the bedroom door. Her mind disoriented.

Excerpt: The pencil did not belong there. Well, maybe it belonged there, but not with those bite marks. I don’t chew my pencils. I find it a repulsive habit, reserved for boy-crazy, anxious school girls. I should know, I teach them history for a living.
