What is a mystery? It's like a puzzle. A reader has to discover the secret or riddle in order to solve it and find out who the criminal or enemy is. Clues are imperative, but should be puzzling. Make a reader have to think by using a strong plot that paints a picture in the reader's mind, yet leaves them guessing. |

What is your idea of a good mystery? Is it a cozy mystery with less action, a hardboiled detective mystery, an amateur detective mystery, or one not mentioned here?
Why is the setting so important when writing a mystery? The setting specifies when and where the story takes place. It can be at any time, any place, and anywhere as long as the author makes sure that the setting fits the time frame.
The setting should be as well defined as the characters in the story, especially if the place is where clues to the mystery are going to be found. Remember, a good mystery is challenging. To hold a reader's interest, plot, characters, and setting go hand in hand. There is nothing worse than nameless characters, places, or events to dull a story. Then there's realism. A well written mystery should not be confused with science fiction. If you are writing a horror/mystery combination, try to keep the characters and setting as realistic as possible, and the reader in suspense until the very end. The same applies if you are writing a mystery/thriller. Giving a few clues to go on as the story is read is essential when writing a mystery. Just do not give too much away too soon.

I love reading/writing hard boiled but most people want something to solve so I am in a minority. When I do crave a mystery it needs to be under a thousand words and that too is deviant! DB Cooper
I know exactly what you mean. I was listening to this book on tape and the writer practically listed the actions that took place. I didn't hear any description...
Actually, I should probably read over what I added in my novel... Blanknow |
