Welcome to the Contests & Activities Newsletter. I'm spidey Author Icon, and I'm your Editor this week. I'll be discussing Campfires. Pay attention, as there will be a quiz on this. (Okay, not a quiz, but there is a contest! Read through the newsletter for details!)

Campfires

Campfires are a fun and interactive way of writing with a group. Imagine sitting around a campfire with a group of your friends. The leader of the campfire begins a story that is then passed around the group for their input. With up to 25 participants, you never can tell where these are going to lead!

A step-by-step guide to creating a Campfire

Step 1:

Click on "Writing" at the very top of any WDC page, and then click on "Campfire Creative" within the Writing: Interactive Section. (Or you can click on "Create an Item" within the Site Tools selection in the Site Navigation Tool at the left of the screen.)

Step 2:

Choose a topic. Campfires can involve a variety of topics. It's totally up to you! *Smile*

Step 3:

Enter the title and brief description. Rate it according to its contents, and select genres and keywords (to make the item pop up when members browse genres or search for specific words).

Step 4:

Write your item body, which should include instructions for your viewers on how they can participate and/or contribute to your campfire. You may want to list specific requirements and rules here.

Step 5:

Choose your setting of minimum and maximum campfire addition. Enter the number of characters (letter, number, punctuation and spaces) for a minimum and maximum amount.

Step 6:

Click on "Save Item."

A few things to keep in mind:

1. CC leader As the campfire's leader, you may choose to be sent copies of each addition into your email inbox. This can be a great way to keep track of each addition. The default is "Do NOT CC Leader," so if you wish to be emailed, you'll need to change the setting.

2. How to invite Once the campfire is set up, you'll click on "Manage Campfire" to open up the invitee page. Here you will enter the usernames of those you'd like to invite to your campfire.

3. Beginning You'll need to have at least one member accept your invitation before you can begin your new campfire.

4. Ratings As the campfire leader, it's your responsibility to be sure the rating reflects the contents of your campfire. If an addition is made that exceeds the item's rating, you must either change the rating or edit the edition.

Did you know?

To end a campfire, click on "Manage Campfire" and then "Extinguish." You'll have the option of writing an ending as you extinguish the campfire creative.

A campfire can be rekindled and opened again!

Additions can be edited by the campfire owner! Again, in the "Manage Campfire" area, choose "List/Edit Additions" to make any edit changes.

Interested in joining a campfire? Look toward the bottom of the item, after the last addition. There you'll find a link to request an invitation.

A few campfires that are full (not accepting invitations) but are good reading-material! And remember, campfires can always use reviews, too!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter gave information on the new contest entry genre.

Hi Spidey! Thanks for included my contest Flash of Lightning in the newsletter. The support is greatly appreciated. *Smile*

Thanks! *Smile*

Hey there, Spidey. I'm glad you highlighted the word count feature. The question comes up a lot in the support forums. Hopefully now it will come up a lot less.

Thanks! The support forums are a great way to find answers to those tricky areas of WDC. We're all lost at times, and that forum can really help. As I'm sure Elisa: Snowman Stik Author Icon would tell everyone, a great tip, before you ask your question, is to use the search bar to see if it's already been asked! *Smile*

Question to think about: What are your favorite campfires to browse and read? I think we all like to read campfires, even if we're not participating in them. I'd like to know which ones you enjoy reading!
