By any other name would smell as sweet."

Hi, my handle is Prosperous Snow; I chose this because it is the meaning of my middle and first name. My last name has a meaning as well, but I am not precisely sure what it is. My last name means either Bum or Where the Wild Things Live. If I combine all those meaning then my name is Prosperous Snow Bum Where the Wild Things Live, which is too long for a handle or a pen name.
The etymology of names has always interested me because names have their origin in a person’s cultural background and reveal how much alike and different one person is to or from the next. All names have meanings whether the name is a first, middle or last name. Many last names come from what a person’s ancestor did for a living. For instance, I met someone in college whose last name was Fightmaster, which gave some indication of what one ancestor did for a living.
The names we give our characters in science fiction and fantasy have meanings. Often an author does not consider what a main character’s first and last name means. In most cases, unless you are writing flash fiction and want to save words on descriptions, it is not necessary to consider the meaning of the first and last name of the main character. However, if you want to give your novel or short story a little something extra then letting the character names reflect some aspect of personality, appearance or career might be a good idea.
Several websites give the meaning of both surnames (last names) and given names (first names). All of these websites work well when naming characters because they give the meaning and the origins of the names. Some names may have several meanings because of their usage in different cultures. These meanings only add depth to the character.

The characters in all these stories have interesting names, which attracted my attention.
