If we lived in a State where virtue was profitable, common sense would make us good, and greed would make us saintly. And we'd live like animals or angels in the happy land that needs no heroes. But since in fact we see that avarice, anger, envy, pride, sloth, lust and stupidity commonly profit far beyond humility, chastity, fortitude, justice and thought, and have to choose, to be human at all … why then, perhaps we must stand fast a little--even at the risk of being heroes.

WANTED: One Honest To Goodness Hero
As the world becomes smaller and bad guys and evil organizations become larger, many people feel that their way of life is threatened by powerful and basically insane people. If half of our polictical system is against America winning in Iraq, aren't they then against America? If our news media and college professors promote their own polictical views rather than the truth, aren't they abusing their First Amendment rights? Why is Christopher Columbus all of the sudden an evil guy? Why are they trying to rewrite history? Who is trying to kill all our heroes, and why?
Personally, I am frightened by the spiraling downfall of this great nation. I feel in my heart of hearts, that we are under constant attack from both the inside and out. We are are own worse enemy. We try to rehabilitate our hardened criminals; we are guilted into being politically correct, which mutes us from speaking out against injustice. We have become a society that is over legislated, we're told how to raise our children, what kind of car we should drive, what we should or should not eat, what we can or cannot say so that we don't offend anyone, and kept in constant fear and guilt that we are the cause for the destruction of the entire world.
Well, personally, I've had it! America is the country of the FREE. The HOME OF THE BRAVE! We don't need BIG BROTHER telling us what we can or cannot do. What we DO need is a strong leader--we need a HERO.
Characteristics for an American HERO:
Strong, action oriented male/female with extraordinary abilities
Strong leadership skills
A clear and direct moral code
Able to face a variety of life threatening situations
Must speak English
Has no regard for political correctness
Must believe in the motto: 'You're either with us, or agin' us.'
Would rather kickass than negotiate
If you fit these descriptions, then you're country NEEDS YOU!
If you are willing to stand up for everything that's GOOD and RIGHT in the world, then we need you NOW!
If you're idea of JUSTICE is to be swift and representative of AN EYE FOR AN EYE, then you are the American Hero we are looking for.
JOE HERO, WE NEED YOU!
"People identify with heroes: They're the embodiment of the American myth of the lone, rugged individual who comes into a society and cleans it up."
~ George Slosser
"I think ADVENTURE stories do represent the best of ourselves and the people we'd like to be.... I think there is the wish fulfillment that you can sometimes feel powerless in the world and, if you had superhuman abilities, you could fight back."
~Al Gough
The adventure story, where one or a few characters are able to save or restore a threatened WAY OF LIFE or some important aspect of society, is appealing in the same way that the story of Robin Hood continues to appeal.
ACTION is the key ingredient here. It may be person against person or it may be person against the environment or the world. The main thing is: kick butt and get the job done!
Until next time,

Stories With Heroes
| | Heroes (E) A warriors thoughts on war, told in a story form.. #1307085 by Ambush |
[Excerpt] This war was different from other wars; the men who went there were younger, some of them didn’t want to go, for others, their reasons for going were different and some didn’t have to go, and some ran away. The people of this country didn’t hold the same regard for life as the young man’s country did. They would send young children to their death for a cause they didn’t even understand yet. So these young men had to hurt young children and women to save their own lives.

| | Death Wink (13+) First prize in two contests. A gambler encounters his addiction's end in a deadly game. #1018243 by Kotaro |
[Excerpt] “Welcome, my guests. As you know, all of you will be playing a game. If you win, your debt will be forgiven. If you lose, you will die.” He paused to let the gravity of our situation sink in. He took a sip of tea, leaned back into his red chair, and pointed a fat finger. “There can be from one to four losers, at least one of you will win.

[Excerpt] Fred was shaken out of his daydream when a siren went off; its sound pierced the air. Goosebumps went up his arm. He sat at the end of his bed, turning on the television. There were thousands of people waiting in Time Square... waiting to die. He thought he’d go, and pocketed Cathy’s picture.

[Excerpt] The day of the attack, the bandits rode up the hill, upon the main path towards the village, just as the lead samurai said they would. The villagers waited in silent anticipation, clutching their makeshift spears and patting their hastily sewn together armor, as the goblin raiders charged through the main gate.

[Excerpt] She knew she was awake again and she was thinking of what to hum next when she sensed someone watching her. She thought it was Mommy back to check on her, but when she opened her eyes, two dark, soulless orbs stared back at her through the window. They blocked out the stars. She saw only the black depths of those eyes and she could not move. She could not blink. She tried to cry out, but her throat had frozen. Slowly, the Stranger smiled at her. It was not a friendly smile; it was not kind. It was the grimace of conquest. Her bladder gave up its contents to the sheets.
[Excerpt] He slammed to a stop just inches from her small form. Then he erected himself to his fullest height -- towering over her. “You what? You challenge me? Your loss has affected your thinking. You are a female! Females do not lead. They are but breeding stock to replenish the group.”

Loved your hole-in-the-ground adventure! I can smell the earth (worms and all!) and even feel the dozens of creepie-crawlies down my neck. Eesh! And just before bed, too! Good one.

Frightening, but I was lucky to avoid those type of expiriences as a kid. I actually ended up being the one running whichever of my younger brothers was hurt that time inside the house to my parents. Maybe that's how I got into the medical field...
There is a story called, Owlsight, that I enjoy. It's the first of a trilogy, the folowing two books are, Owlflight, and Owlknight. They're by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dickson.(he's her husband.) I think you'd like them.
