Letter from the editor

First off, I have to let you know that I've been married for almost five years. While that doesn't necessarily make me an expert on marriage and love, it does give me a bit of experience in that area.

As much as I'd like it to be, love isn't all about happily ever after. Relationships are all about ups and downs. Merging your life with another person is bound to have some setbacks and some negative moments.

It's important to remember this when writing a love story. Having two characters meet, fall in love and live happily ever after doesn't even work in fairy tales anymore. Readers need conflict. Generally, in love stories, characters meet and some force keeps them apart. This type of conflict is vital to a good love story. Whether it's different backgrounds, other people, or the lovers themselves, something should be working against them being together.

While this need for conflict may or may not be present in true romances, conflict is present. Adding "problems" to your fictional relationships can add a dose of reality to draw your reader into the story.

Thankfully, I haven't had too much conflict in my own marriage. Like most relationships, we have our ups and downs, but in the end I think we'll get a happy ending.
