Scrollies Image by Jedi Moose Author IconMail Icon

Scrollies - what are they and are they contagious?

They sound like something you might catch if you didn't shower for a couple of weeks, but Scrollies are not some mysterious disease. Scrollies are the affectionate name for the people who use Writing.com's Scrolling Message system.

Where do Scrollies hang out?

Scrollies can be found by clicking on the IM box at the bottom of Site Navigation (in the left column). Once you click on the IM box, a smaller pop-up window will appear on your screen that will look similar to the image below (sans the arrows with the explanations). This box is Writing.com's IM System and the lower portion is what we call Scroll. Notice the black bar with the word Scrolling on it? That bar and everything below it is Scroll.

What do Scrollies do?

When you first open Scroll, I find it's best to do a couple of things. If it's your first time in scroll, click on the [?] next to the word Scrolling and you will be given some of the most important rules for Scroll. Read these rules! Since Scroll can be viewed by all members of Writing.com, it is also important to follow these rules.

Next you will notice at the bottom is a small box beneath the words Enter your "ASR" Rated message. This is where you type the the message you want to post into scroll. Before you post, it helps to observe for a minute to see what the conversation is about and get a general idea of the atmosphere of Scroll. Some WritingML does work in Scroll (color and font tags, emoticons, and ritem links).

Scrollies also play games. Not just any games, but games that earn gift points. Two examples of scroll games are shown above. When a game is created by one of the Scrollies, it will first appear green. When a game has been won by at least one person, but not solved by three people, it will appear blue. Click where it says Play Now and it will open a pop-up window with one of three types of games in it. You will have to guess a number between 1 - 1000, you will have to solve a puzzle by filling in letters of the alphabet, or you will have to answer a trivia question. If you are one of the first three people to get the answer correct, you will win gift points and score points. When the game is solved by three people it will appear orange and can no longer be played. Score points are tallied and at the end of each month the top five winners receive a merit badge. To create a Scroll Game click on one of the following: [G] [P] [T]. To check the scoreboard, click on the [#].

What do Scrollies eat?

It's a well known fact that if you don't see any Scrollies, you can usually entice them out of "lurker" mode by tossing a bit of chocolate into Scroll. Scrollies love Chocolate (most of them, anyway)! Any type of chocolate works - cookies, donuts, candy, ice cream - anything you have handy.

So next time you have a few minutes, pop into Scroll and say hi! I promise, the Scrollies don't bite. Not hard anyway. *Wink* Below in the Editor's picks you will find a couple of pieces on Scroll Etiquette. These are short and on the suggested reading list prior to entering Scroll.

I hope you’ve found this issue helpful!
