“All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”

Greetings, I am honored to be the guest editor for this issue of the Writing.Com Fantasy Newsletter ^_^ I believe that all creative writing, be it poetry or prose, has an element of fantasy. We write what we know, perceive, and imagine.*Star*

The word “fantasy” has myriad definitions; but thumb through any dictionary, or surf dictionary.com or wikipedia.com, and you will see that they all begin with “imagination.”

Is that not what the writer does? ~ Observe, perceive, or visualized an object, emotion, situation, and with pen/pencil, or keyboard, use words to develop a story or a poem that relates that observation, perception, or vision.*Star*

Letter from the editor

Today, as your guest, I would like to direct your attention to a dynamic and evolving form of fantasy ~ one of my favorites ~

Manga and Anime

Manga is a mode of high fantasy writing where the writer incorporates elements of action, adventure, visionary beings, alternate worlds, magic (often found in role-playing games, perhaps) with mythology, history, science. The result is the story of a world peopled by anime characters, which I see as believable, yet just beyond the realm of reality.

The terms “manga” and “anime” are often used interchangeably to refer to both the written stories (which are read from right to left, even English ones) and the images and drawings, which exemplify the genre. Manga (Japanese for “flowing words”) is actually the written story, and anime refers to the distinctive Japanese-originated imagery (animation)*Smile* ~ one reads manga and watches anime*Smile*.

Manga and anime have a rich tradition, having been around for centuries in Japan as a form of entertainment. The current familiar style of manga and anime is credited to Osamu Tezuka who, after World War II, incorporated some of the imagery of Disney and Max Fleischer into traditional Japanese manga.

This delightful and imaginative form has grown fast over the past half-century across age and gender lines. Today one will find manga and anime for everyone from small children to adults (some adult-rated), They all share some distinctive characteristics, particularly with respect to expressive large eyes, elongated limbs, large speech bubbles. Manga is also read from right to left, even the stories written in English or other non-Japanese languages.

The growing popularity of manga and anime worldwide makes this a form of fantasy writing that is open to new writers with creative and vivid imaginations (yes, you, reading this today*Smile*). The formerly tiny section of my local bookstore devoted to “Manga” just a few years ago now bears an entire section of multi-faceted manga series, stories, anime fan-fiction, and manga and anime anthologies, visited daily by adult working lunch-hour word-snackers.*Star*. Further, anime conventions draw crowds of fans embracing the many forms of anime and manga, be it fantasy, dark fantasy, fan fiction; who often arrive in cosplay (costumes worn by the fans to emulate characters in series or self-created creatures). Some conventions also connect with and feature fan fiction, or invite the Internet readers and creators of manga and anime.*Star*

Manga stories today, with their believable three-dimensional anime characters, offer a mix of reality and fantasy, and magic happens.*Star*

So, give it a try ~ dream, imagine, think, and create your own manga and/or anime magic*Smile*
