Yeah, it's that time of year again... Time to get in better shape for the shorts and sleeveless tops, at least for me. I've already begun my own program, which I'm journaling as a blog. This time I'm doing it my way. As a librarian, I order all the top diet and exercise books. I frequently browse through them out of curiousity. It's also interesting to watch this material go out. Amaziningly enough, few patrons come back in better shape. In fact, quite often they will check out a different diet book. Why? I think, as you will read in my blog, it's too hard to commit one's self to follow through a program that might seem overwhelming. If the reader is anything like me, I end up spending more time reading what I'm suppose to do instead of doing it. And what book can really tell me exactly what I need? Besides our doctors, we ourselves should be able to read our bodies better than anyone else. You and I both pretty much know what we need to do.
And it's the same with writing.
Don't expect to not write for five years and suddenly sit down and write a novel, (though don't quote me on that since nothing is impossible! ) Daily exercises help us to get our writing in shape. And I must say, reading does, too. Diet and Exercise can be compared to Writing and Reading. If you want great results, I believe you can't have one without the other. There are plenty of books on writing, just like dieting, and yes, many of them are extremely inspirational. These materials helps us to acquire great tips and many times, challenging prompts. Nothing wrong with that. But do we don't write using step-by-step instructions. Well, at least I don't. Like diet and exercise books, I take what works for me and make it my own.
We all procrastinate. So instead of waiting for our muse to appear before our noses, why not tap in to some exercises? We do not need to be committed to a step-by-step program in order to write, but perhaps we might discover inspiration along the way.
Here are a few writing exercises I found recently, my own included:

Excerpt: Occasionally I thought about her in an impure manner. She was loud and had hairy arms but she wasn’t hard to look at. I wondered out loud if women looked better after 4 cups of coffee. To my right Tim grunted. I knew he would get it. Tim had been a counter rat almost as long as I had. He worked for a pest control company and smelled it. I would sit up-fan from him whenever I could. Today I couldn’t.
Excerpt:
Judas, do you judge that such acts are a waste?
Should we think more about the poor?
Or could it be that our acts of sweet love
Could help lift them up from the floor?
Excerpt: Kelly sat alone under the shade of the old oak tree at recess. Mrs. French, her maths, science and homeroom teacher was always trying to pick on her, for reasons unknown to her. Her classmates thought she was weird, with her hair jaggedly cut and dyed black. She had an American accent that people seemed to flinch when they heard the sound of it. If only they knew her home life.
Excerpt:
May 11, 2005
My psychiatrist is making me write in this journal. I think it's stupid. Hear that George? It's stupid.
Excerpt: Mairin’s eyes felt puffy and swollen even though the tears had stopped some time ago. The sun scorched her face and arms and little beads of moisture dotted her forehead. She brushed an unruly curl from her eyes and thought about her destination. Her private little sanctuary, her safe haven. The place she came to when she needed to be alone, to sort out her thoughts. And if there ever was a time she needed to be there, it was now.
Excerpt: My eyes darted across the deck, and I panicked. My brain was not functioning well. There was no way that I could think of to get out of the boat. It was getting too crowded and I was getting pushed. I was pressured. The ship was sinking quicker and quicker, and I didn’t have time to think of anything else. I looked over the railing at the deep shade of blue water and hesitating for only a fraction of a moment, I jumped.

This dramatic piece is full of vivid images and a strong author's voice. I was very impressed with this person's writing, so I thought I'd help spread his/her work around a bit.

Last month's question:
When is your mind most creative
gar57
I write when the stars and moon are in their full glory, my mind comes alive with ideas while I should be sleeping. When my head empties of the daily tasks the night creation machine begins. I write every night and have found recently that the train and stations are great too.
How intereresting! Thank you for sharing that.
Breezy-E ~ In College
When is your mind most creative?
Well, the obvious answer is... when I can't get it down anywhere!
Normally, I'm most creative when I'm laying in bed at night thinking or am in the tub thinking. I day-dream alot too, but while this does produce some great ideas, I'd say that the best time is one of the first two.
Breezy-E
Thanks for your response, Breezy-E! Maybe I should take more baths and less showers.

I totally enjoyed your interpretation of March Madness. I've had a touch of that myself and I fully agree with you. As for when I find myself most creative. As weird as it may sound it is late at night when I am overly tired. I'm not saying I create anything great, but I come up with ideas that I can later use.
I'm glad you enjoyed my madness article. My life is a little calmer now! Your response reminds me of when I'm overly tired myself. Sometimes the mind plays tricks on us at that point, or we tend to think of weird stuff, lol. I wonder if Alfred Hitchcock or Stephen King created his stories when they were overly tired!

Late Happy Birthday for you Cubby and Happy Mother's Day. Instead of March, February has not been a good month for me; everything went wrong in it. Some comfort came by March and thanks for March NoWriMo, I have been able to break the writing block that chased me for some time. Hope your coming days will be as great as you are!
Thank you... (((HUGS))) Thank goodness things are going much better for me now. My life is still somewhat overwheming, but nothing I can't live with, lol! Glad to hear you are writing!

I'm most creative when i am listening to music and sitting by myself. blessed be. )O(
Excellent idea! So far, it looks to me that anything that relaxes the mind and body is when it is most creative.... Baths, late nights with no interruptions, and music. Sounds nice!
Shyanne Elaine Miller
just wanted to say happy belated birthday!!!
(e:heart} Thank you so much!!!
JDowls
First, Id like to wish you a belated happy birthday.
Second, Id also like to say that March Madness has driven all over me! Besides the 4 inches of snow that fell last weekend, March is just a hard month to begin with! And I'll take your advice and make time for writing!
Thanks so much! Now that March is over (and the storm that hit the first week of April , hopefully this blasted wind will calm down soon and we will get some very nice spring days. As I'm writing this, I have the Boston Marathon on TV (my brother is running in it), and the weather is crappy! There's a downpour and the wind gusts might get up to 50 mph. I guess my life could be worse, eh?

My mind seems to be most creative when I need a diversion. People who talk just to hear themselves make my mind wander and I find myself coming up with some pretty good ideas.
Oh, I like that one a LOT! I think I've done the same thing. Thanks for your response!

This is such a beautiful newsletter. Kudos to you! Amazing job!
Bests,
Sarah
Thank you so much, Sarah!

The first thing in the am! Early wee hours with a pot of coffee at my side and a quiet house. Do I DO most of my writing then? No, although I'd like to be able to do that! But I take notes so I will remember those great thoughts later when I can write. I even keep a notebook in the car, because I often come up with ideas then, and have been known to pull over to the side so I can write them down before they get lost on me!
Sounds good to me, Fynn! I like the wee hours of the morning also. But then I have to get ready for work and it just ruins everything for me! I have a great job, but I'd rather be home. I'll never get published with this attitude, lol! I just have way TOO much I enjoy doing. Your notebook in the car is a great idea. I should do that with my dreams. I dream almost every night but I never right my dreams down and then I forget them. *pghtb*
June Afternoon
hello cubby, i really liked the newsletter! i think i'm most creative when i'm not supposed to be writing. for example, during exams!! that is, of course, really unfortunate for me!!
You know, I think many of us want to do things when we aren't suppose to, lol! Thanks for your honest response!

When am I most creative? In the late hours of the night, or rather early morning. I guess it's because the lack of sleep wears my inhibitions down, or something of that nature. Whatever it is, it works!
Wow, these late night responses are popular! I hope anyone with writer's block is reading this and will consider trying it. Thank you for sharing!

My mind seems to be most creative when it is inconvenient for me to write, say during the last week before a Chemistry project deadline. It's aggravating, because while I'm trying to concentrate on atoms, in the back of my mind sorcerers are zapping each other. And then I find it difficult to write my story after I've been typing away for days at something completely different. :P But it ends up balancing out with semi-creative days placed at random with more time to write.
I am surprised how similar these responses are! Thank you so much for sharing. I really got a kick out of your atoms focus getting interrupted by sorcerers zapping each other! . I enjoyed your response!
Stephanie
My mind is most creative in the very early morning hours between waking and dreaming.
Thank you for sharing. I think I tend to fall in this catagory also.
