Excerpt: It was about ten-thirty on a cold, windy morning in San Diego. I sat at the coffee shop I went to regularly, just a few blocks from my apartment. The place was sort of pricey, but I’d become friends with the owners, a cute Taiwanese couple. Besides, there weren’t enough of these places left anymore; not with Starbucks, McDonalds and Dominos Pizza on every city block. This place was me, it was home. I sat outside on the patio and sipped my Latte’. It was Sunday, the day-old morning paper was spread across my lap and I casually leaned back in one of those cheap plastic garden chairs. It was a beautiful morning; the sky was watercolor blue and the wispy fog rolled over the valley and the bay. The ocean melted hazily with the blue of the horizon and could be seen from almost anywhere in San Diego; infinite amounts of colors that reflected from the ocean spilled across the sky like a painted picture.

Excerpt:
At the shore line now, its sights and
sounds assail me: seagulls circle low,
haunting taunts, lamenting their lost catch;
surfers lie in patient wait for perfect waves
that never seem to crest on this calm and
peaceful day; and disappointed beach kids
kicking up the sand, anxious hands held high
begging kites to kiss the sleepy sky.

Fearful Journey Open in new Window. [E]
Nightmares are the scariest when you are awake!
by Walrus Author Icon

Excerpt: We left at twelve o’clock at night and it did not take long to realize that I was in deep trouble. Within the first forty minutes, Ouma Dolly argued with me about the way we had to go, and being respectful of her experience and wisdom, as well as her being my grandmother, I followed her counsel and took the wrong freeway to the south. In fact, the freeway did not even go as much south as what it turned out to go west southwest. Satisfied that her counsel had been followed, Ouma Dolly promptly fell asleep and only woke up briefly at five o’clock the morning somewhere in the middle of the Free State province, while I was trying to find our location on a map.

The Depraved World of Fashion Open in new Window. [13+]
An article inspired by the fallacies of fashion.
by Boy, i'm awesome. Author Icon

Excerpt: So there I was, at noon exactly, flashing my press credentials to the ticket officials and strolling through the entrance toward what was sure to be one of the most arduously boring and perplexing events of my life. I had no notion of what fashion should be, nor did I even have the slightest idea of what fashion even was for that matter. With this lack of knowledge, it was hard to imagine myself writing anything of substance on the subject. To me, clothing was a necessity. In fact, considering the mild Los Angeles climate, I had no need for clothing as far as survival was concerned. It was a must simply because it was a law. Tracing in my mind the history and uses of clothing, I found it difficult to fathom how fashion became such a cultural obsession.

Mooching Open in new Window. [GC]
A day in the life of a moocher.
by djones Author Icon

Excerpt: It was not a long trip; she lives right around the corner from me. Very convenient if I do say so myself. I have always had a close relationship with her, even though sometimes I don’t believe she feels the same way. She has never come out and said anything to me about being such a scab, but then again, she has never smiled when handing me my dinner. One of these days, I will have to find a way to make it up to her. As a stay at home parent with nine kids, I know that it has had to be hard on her. I love my nieces and nephews to the point that I have tried to be a father figure to them, but they still see me as the fun uncle that lets them get away with murder.

*Note* Last month's question: After browsing through several older newsletters in the archives, I noticed many of our newer members (from that time) were invalid. I realize this is not highly unusual, as members come and go, and sometimes return, but my question this week is: If you have ever even considered leaving this community, what would your main reason(s) be? Do you have complaints?

*Check1* Pennie Author IconMail Icon
Hi, I've been away for awhile. Just returned to find my newsletters. I have decided at this time to subscribe to the others and remain with you. As I am a newbie and do not know if I can even write anything, I will take it slow. I find your newsletter very informative and helpful to me. How do I keep up with all the items suggested for reading? It appears to be a lot. Anyway I will be happily shoveling through. Keep up the good works. coldframe10

That's one thing you can do here... take it slow. Or take it fast. You can go at whatever pace you need to. Plus learn while your at it. Glad you like the newsletters! *Bigsmile* BTW, no one expects you to read all the suggested reading. *Laugh* Wow, we'd all have to quit our jobs and divorce our families if we did! Those items are posted for us to consider reading.

No complaints here. If I left, it would be because I was just too busy to do anything here anymore.

I feel exactly the same way, Breezy-E! *Smile*

Hi Cubby,

In dealing with anonymous reviewers, you can contact the person back by responding to the review. It is sent anonymously through the system so you don't know who you are replying to. IF they respond back to you're reply though, they will be revealing themselves.

I don't encourage people to respond to nasty reviews; it won't change anything, but if you reply kindly, sometimes you will get a response back.

You are correct, they can hurt your confidence and self-esteem. I find the best thing is to weigh that one review against all of the other reviews I've received and that usually puts it into perspective for me. *Smile*

I'm glad you mentioned the positive ones, too. There are several groups that do things anonymously (like Secret Admirers, and the Secret Santa's in "Christmas Extravaganza 2006", so it's can be used for good!

And, as someone who does occasionally do something anonymously, I do read the thank you forums, so thanks for posting them!

Ter

Nicely put, Terry! Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. It's important for members to know that Anon is not always 'the bad guy'. *Smile*

The only way I would ever consider leaving was if it was interfering with school so much, I was starting to fail. :)

*Smile* Sounds like a good enough reason to me. *Wink* And hopefully that won't happen.

To Cubby's question of the month.

I'm new here and quite overwhelmed at the options and choices. I imagine if I left here for any reason it would be confusion. Fine Intros are the only thing that has gotten me this far.

Yes, there are many options and choices, for sure! Don't feel too overwhelmed however. Just take your time and enjoy things slowly. If you have questions, you can always contact a moderator (blue and purple cases). We will be more than happy to explain most anything. Another writing resource is "Getting Started: Table of ContentsOpen in new Window. *Smile* Thank you for your honest response. *Bigsmile*

Thanks for the great article about Anonymous reviewers, because i agree with you all the way. Especially how to deal with those cowards who write reviews that should hardly be considered to be a review!

Great article, I know not to discriminate against anonymous reviewers :)

*Bigsmile* Glad you liked the article.

*Note* Cubby's Question of the Month *Note*

What is your favorite genre? When I first began working at the local public library, the Mystery genre was the most popular, but now it seems to be Christian fiction. At a neighboring library, Fantasy is the favorite.
