What is it about this time of year that makes me think about food? Could it be the stacks of pumpkin pie filling and marshmallows in the center aisle of the supermarket? Could it be the Christmas music filling the air? Maybe it starts with Halloween candy, and ends with drinks at New Year's, but this time of year is perfect for a culinary mystery! |

Nothing is better than spending a cold, rainy, Sunday with a good book. No, check that. Nothing is better than spending a cold, rainy, Sunday on an extra-large, super-stuffed recliner chair with your small dog by your side and a plate of double fudge brownies in front of you and a steaming cup of caramel hot chocolate in one hand and a great mystery story in the other.
You can combine both pleasures of eating and reading, when you consume a Culinary Mystery.
What is a Culinary Mystery? It is a mystery story with all the basic ingredients of a traditional mystery, (usually a cozy type) along with recipes you can actually use to make for yourself some of the featured foods mentioned in the story.
I love to cook, and I love mysteries, so this type of mystery story is delicious to me. There must be a small contingency of readers like myself, who enjoy this combination of recipes and murder, because there is a cornucopia of stories to choose from.

These stories are in no way gruesome or graphic, and all culinary mysteries are a little on the light and fluffy side, but sometimes you need a little dessert after eating a main course, like Dickens!
How can you write a culinary mystery? It helps if you know how to cook! It also helps if you have some unique family recipes you would like to share and your Aunt Clara will let you use. A background in the food service industry, whether it is as a grind at McDonalds, or running your own catering business can be useful too, to gain understanding of a potential food centered setting, like a restaurant or even a high school cafeteria.
Use your basic mystery ingredients and stir it up with some spicy dialogue with a dash of recipes (use recipes you know taste well and are fool proof).
There are readers out there who are hungry for a great culinary mystery. Can you serve it up for them?

werden : I too, love a mystery/horror. I love trying to figure out who, or better ,what is the killer. If you add an element of supernatural that makes it better.
That is true. Although I never believe in supernatural murders; just the humans who are trying to make it look that way. Otherwise, I feel we delve into fantasy instead of mystery.
Nighala a.k.a. Doxie Do-Right :Schipperke,
