About This Newsletter

Sig for the Horror/Scary Newsletter

This is it…Halloween. Are you ready? All the scariest stories at Writing will be presented here for your terrifying approval. You know me; I love this time of year. I believe that Fall is my favorite of all the seasons. Even the name, Fall, reminds me of lines of steadfast soldiers falling like leaves among the dead and dying—amid the decaying flesh and bones of other fallen heroes.

It is a time when the trees shutdown their life-giving blood, and their leaves begin to die and turn brilliant colors of red, yellow, green and brown.
And in the distance, you can see dark clouds gathering off the horizon and hear the thunder boom loud enough to crack the world. You can feel the air begin to cool and the wind whisper of the approaching change. You can smell the fields of wheat, straw and moist earth—like old bones rising to the surface after a drenching rain.

Fall is the time of year when all things must die in order to be resurrected again. Christ said His return would come like the changing of the seasons, and I believe that this time...this time, I can sense it in my bones, feel it in my heart. The season has changed. Fall is here. It’s Halloween!

HALLOWEEN EXTRAVAGANZA!

As you lie in bed, waiting in darkness, tense, and listening for movement, you hear no other sound but your low breathing. A minute passes, another, and then you hold your breath and there is no sound at all. You are utterly alone.

The darkness begins to thicken as though some primal malevolence were rising from the deep trenches of the earth and spreading across your walls in marbled veins of black. Your eyes jiggle, straining open as wide as possible. Except for the yellow glow of your outside light, the room is as dark as blood.

You close your eyes, seeking inner peace, but find only turmoil and shadows. You try taking slow deep breaths to calm yourself. Instead, your breathing becomes more rapid, ragged. It is hard to believe that in the daylight, this room is the happiest place you’ve ever known, yet now it is almost as unfamiliar as a stranger’s house.

The ink-black gathers silently around you, as shadows roil and ripple about the room. There is one that stands hunched over your bed, its hands appearing to dangle to its knees. It turns its head from side to side, smelling the air in search of its prey, and then bends to the edge of your bed, sniffing. With all the suppleness of a black silk ribbon, it slips in-between your sheets as your pent-up breath swells in your lungs.

The urge to flee becomes overpowering, but you remain frozen with fear. You feel it flow across your legs, working its way up your body like the gooseflesh that rises against your skin. It smells you, explores the seawater scent of your gender, and for a moment you wonder if it will painfully enter you. Grim seconds turn into minutes, and then to your surprise, it moves up toward your head.

The shadow lies atop your body like a weightless lover, head raised inches above your face. A scream gathers in your chest, rumbles up your throat, but issues with no more force than a stuttering moan. This horror is real. The blood, when it comes, will be thick, warm, and wet. Its mouth gapes wide and the porch light silvers a stream of drool that slowly slips from its lips. You can feel its hot breath upon your neck, smell its moldy, nauseating stench and decay. It has a voice, a hoarse, gravelly whisper, husky and guttural. Its mouth moves up and down as though it is unused to human speech, and then vomits up the words like the ripping of a torn sheet, “Happy Halloween!” *Bigsmile*

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist...lol.

My only tip for you this month is to write with your senses and not your brain. Think about it! *Cool*

Until next time,

billwilcox

Frenzied Feedback

Author Icon bleeds:
Nice work on the Horror Newsletter, and thanks for the plug x 3 .
I'm five books into Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series, and the point you discussed in your NL was exactly the thing I was thinking about today. With all the crazy stuff that's happening in these books, the one thing I'm amazed at is King's ability to pull it off with a casual, matter-of-fact tone that makes it believable. Instead of trying to frighten you with talk about creepy vampire-like making their once-per-generation trip to town to steal babies, he builds up to it by showing how everyone's life is affected by the event and how they plan to endure/survive it (like it's nothing stranger than a hurricane or a bad winter). Anyhoo, thanks again for the great NL.
-Rick
I agree. If you can make your characters believable, you can put them in just about any situation and the reader will follow eagerly.

daycare shudders:
I'm surprised you ever doubted your work. You are one of the best in the horror genre. Great newsletter.
Wendie
Thank you...*Blush*

alicengoreland regurgitates:
"The key to credibility in horror begins with setting and characters." ~This is so true. I think that in the genre of horror its roots must be well founded. Why? Because unlike any other genre it is and emotion.
Alice out of words
Yes, I can feel the love...*Cool*

SHERRI GIBSON Author Icon adds eye of newt:
I've read entries from all of you, and they were great! The best to you!

schipperke screams:
NO pressure Bill! I expect the check by next Thursday!!
The checks in the mail, Schippers. *Laugh*

kelly1202 drools a bib of blood:
Some great tips, Bill. As usual your newsletter is filled with helpful advice and it will get printed off and filed away in my 'horror' file for reference.
~Kelly
That file has got to be getting pretty full by now Kelly...*Wink*
