Today, we're going to talk about gifs.
The first thing to know is that it's pronounced like "gift," only without that final t. I know some people seem to think it's pronounced like the peanut butter brand, but that's wrong. The original file format was an abbreviation for "graphics interchange format," not "giraffe interchange format."
Yes, I know the creator of the file type pronounced it "jif." I don't care. Jod Himself could descend from Heaven and pronounce it that way, and He'd be Wrong.
With that out of the way, gifs aren't necessarily funny. But they can add humor to any post, like so:
Anyone who follows me knows that I like to promote stuff on the Newsfeed using gifs. You don't have to. But if you want to, here's a quick guide to gifs on WDC:
Above most text entry boxes on Writing.com is an array of formatting buttons. They exist to make life easier. I've been around long enough to remember when we didn't have them, and life was more difficult back then, even disregarding the whole "hiding from rampaging velociraptors" thing. Anyway, on the far right of said buttons is a black rectangle with a colored rectangle within it. You probably can't read it, but the text at the bottom says "Giphy."
This refers to an offsite repository of animated gifs, which, upon pressing the button, you can access.
You'll need to search by text. Nowadays, with everyone using AI, we're used to crafting very specific prompts, like "O Great And Powerful AI, please, I beseech thee, bestow unto me a drawing of a domestic cat, dark and mysterious and bewildered, which has upon its head a small gray mouse with very long whiskers."
No. Don't do that here. Give it one or two words, preferably ones that reflect what you're looking for. For instance, if I type "cat mouse" into the search box, this is one of the several animated images that come up:
Now, you should have several to choose from, hopefully related to your search term(s). If you don't like any of them, maybe search again using different words. Once you've found one you like, just click on it, and the system should automatically copy the {embed:} link. You can then paste it into your text box using Ctrl-V (on Windows), or whatever the "paste" command is for the system you're using.
That's it. Simple, right? Now go forth and be animated.
