Readability

One of the most important things you can do for your writing (either here on the site or elsewhere) is take some time to consider the presentation. Luckily, here on Writing.com, there are a variety of formatting options that can help you make your work stand out a little more.

For anyone who's read through items on the site for any length of time, you might notice that the default setting leaves a little bit to be desired. The default font is Arial Size 3 which, on many screen setups, is the equivalent of Arial 10-point font. The site doesn't automatically indent or provide additional linespace, which often means that if you're not making those formatting choices intentionally (or copying/pasting from a document that doesn't preserve that formatting), you're probably getting a big block of very small text with very little separation between the lines and paragraphs, which can make readability a real issue for many users.

There is one school of thought that goes, "Well, that's the reader's problem. If it's too small for them to read, they can zoom in, change their screen settings, or get a reader app, or whatever they need to do." Of course, the other school of thought is, "If it's difficult to read, a lot of people might just choose not to." *Bigsmile*

If you're interested in making your work on the site more appealing to readers, I have a couple of WritingML tools that I often use to make the experience of reading my work a little easier.

1. Size. I'm not going to mention font choice because that's a personal choice for each author, and I don't really much care about whether someone chooses Arial or Verdana or Times (just as long as it's not Comic *Pthb*). But all of the fonts, at the standard Size 3, are too small for reading at length. It's not a big deal for newsfeed updates or blog comments or emails, but when it comes to reading poetry or fiction that's potentially hundreds or even thousands of words long, a larger size is much more comfortable to read for most folks. It's doesn't have to be giant, but an item in a Size 3.5 or Size 4 font is demonstrably easier to read than at item in Arial Size 3. All you have to do to change the font size of your item is to sandwich it between {size:X}{/size} WritingML tags, where X is a number between 1 and 5 (in increments of .5).

2. Line Space. The default line spacing on this site is 1.2. Increasing it to 1.4 or 1.6 can created so much-needed separation between the lines to create some white space and make it easier to read. You can create additional line space by using the {linespace:X}{/linespace} WritingML tags, where X is any number between 1 and 3 (in increments of .1).

3. Paragraph Breaks. When reading things online, the name of the game is contrast between white space and text. The more balance you have between the two, the easier it will be to read. Even though printed materials like books and magazines don't typically add a line of separation between paragraphs, it can be a really good idea for online items in order to increase readability. This one doesn't even need any fancy WritingML tags; you can just hit 'Enter' an extra time between paragraphs when formatting them here on the site.

There are tons of other WritingML settings you can play with (including different fonts, text effects like bold or italics, text color, emoticons, etc.), but those are my three go-tos. On nearly every item I write for inclusion in my portfolio, I'll use some combination (or all) of the above to make my items easier for readers to process visually.

You can even program "MacrosOpen in new Window. to simplify your preferred formatting style into a quick keyboard shortcut!

The advice a former Moderator gave me when I first started here was, "If it's worth taking the time to put in your portfolio, it's worth taking a couple of minutes to make sure it's formatted in a reader-friendly way." It's something that I think about every time I create a new item in my portfolio, and I'd encourage you to do the same for your portfolio, however you may personally prefer that formatting to look. You don't have to use the Writing.com default just because it's the default. *Bigsmile*

Until next time,
