Letter from the editor

Does your portfolio ever feel lonely? Do you feel lost on this big site, uncertain how to even begin to get your work out there and connect with other writers? Do you have this brilliant item that deserves more recognition? Most of us have been there at one point or another. Thankfully, there are ways to get you and your items out there!

1. Setting Your Genres:

When you create an item, you have the option to select up to three genres. Many people choose only one, or select non-specific options such as ‘contest item’, ‘writing’ or ‘other’.

It can be tricky to decide what fits your piece, but it’s worth taking a moment to think of the best-suited genres for your item. The reason is that a lot of members look for items to read by searching under their favourite genres. No matter how well your item would suit their tastes, if it isn’t listed under that genre, it stands less chance of being noticed. Setting your genres, then, will gain you more readers!

Your genre selections will also help you if your work gets nominated for "The QuillsOpen in new Window. [ASR]. Your item will be placed in one of the main categories and, in addition, it will get sorted into genre categories where it may win more prizes. This means that if you set all three genres, your item stands four chances of winning. The fewer you select, the fewer chances. Wouldn’t it be a shame to miss out?

2. Use the Newsfeed:

The newsfeed is one of the main places of interaction on Writing.Com. It’s where you’ll find amazing writers and reviewers, fun contests and activities and, by making your own posts and interacting with others, you’ll get your name out there. Once people learn that you exist, and what kind of items you write, they are much more likely to stop by your portfolio.

3. Become a Fan of Other Writers:

There are many brilliant writers here, as well as excellent reviewers and hosts of interesting contests and activities. When you become a fan of these members their posts will show up on your personal newsfeed. That will help keep you up-to-date with their latest work and help you interact with them. They may also follow you back and become a fan of yours!

You can become a fan by clicking twice on the heart next to their name, until it turns golden.

4. Participate in Contests and Activities:

This is a big website with many members, yet only a few ever participate in contests and activities. It's surprising, because participating in contests and activities is one of the best ways to be noticed, and to gain recognition for your writing.

It may seem daunting to have your work compared to that of other writers. I’ve been there. It’s a great way to learn, though, and that’s what we’re here to do. Also, not every activity involves a competitive element. In "Merit Badge MagicOpen in new Window. [E], for example, you are guaranteed your Merit Badge if you complete the assignment of your choice. It’s all good practice, and there’s something for everyone.

Did you know that you can win a million gift points in the official site contest each month? Just saying!

5. The Plug Page:

A good place to get feedback on an item is "The Shameless "Plug" PageOpen in new Window. [E]. It welcomes items rated E – 18+, with "The GC+ Shameless "Plug" PageOpen in new Window. [18+] catering to higher-rated items. You can plug up to three items. Once they’re pushed off the page you can re-plug them, or plug something else.

6. Review Requests:

Many reviewers allow review requests. To see if they do, go to their portfolio, click on the ‘Reviews’ tab, and check if they have Review Requests switched on. If so, you will be able to enter your item, your proposed gift point payment and send a little message. If they are willing and available, they will accept your request.

When you do receive a review, through Review Requests or otherwise, sending them a ‘thank you’ for their feedback is highly recommended. Reviewing takes time and effort, so it’s nice to be appreciated. And people tend to return where they’re appreciated!

7. Review:

Speaking of reviewing, reviewing the works of others is a good way to get involved. It helps you to become a part of the community. If you stop by another member's portfolio with friendly, helpful feedback they may well return the favour.

Reviewing pays in many ways. Not only do you bring a smile to someone’s day, you will learn a lot as you go along. Thinking through what works and doesn’t work will help you to improve your own work, and will see you grow as a writer.

Writing.Com will give you gift points for each review that you do. Recipients may well send you some points as a thank-you. You can earn even more gift points through random review rewards and through Auto-Reward items, which you can find under the Community tab. Gift points can be spent on memberships, Costumicons (when available), Writing.Com shop goodies, Merit Badges, Awardicons, in various activities, or they can be used to thank other members.

The more reviews you do, the greater the chance at earning a monthly reviewing badge. This is in addition to your Consistency Achievement badge if you give a review for seven days in a row, and your reviewing milestone badges.

And if you join a reviewing group and affiliate your reviews with that group… you may guess it: more gift points, and more badges!

Then there are reviewing initiatives such as "Anniversary ReviewsOpen in new Window. [E] and "The B.E.A.R. FundOpen in new Window. [ASR].

You may even win cash through "Good Deeds Get CASH!Open in new Window. [E]!

8. Groups:

Joining a Writing.Com group is an excellent way to meet other members. There are a variety of community groups, as well as groups tailored to more specific interests and genres. There's bound to be one for you, and if not, you can create one for other people to join!

9. Messenger:

Writing.Com Messenger - often called Scroll - is a place where you can chat with other members and play little games to earn gift points. Why not stop by and say hi? There's usually someone around.

10. Free Merit Badges:

Did you know that you can send a free Merit Badge to a member of your choice every 30 days? It normally costs 10,000 gift points to send a Merit Badge (unless there is a special offer), so don't miss out on sending one when it's free!

Most people love to receive a Merit Badge. It's a nice way to show appreciation and send encouragement.

---

As in most communities, Writing.Com is a place where the more you participate, the more you will get out of it. It doesn’t take a huge amount of effort to get noticed, though. Socialise a little, do some reviews, have a go at a contest or activity and you will have a great time!

We’re a friendly bunch. We like to see people succeed. Come join us – it’s very rewarding!
