I had recently asked WDC-ers who happened across my notebook, asking them what kind of comedy they like. I got various answers to that question. I also got what I hoped and expected, the actual interaction that had its own humorous responses.
This is the beauty of comedy, folks. It is at most times a spur of the moment flow of ideas that show participants in the informal poll how pain-free being humorous can be.
I believe that there are many people who think comedy is a difficult genre to add to serious subject matter. But, I assure you it is not! Think about the many different genre books you read. Some are drama, some science fiction, or even horror. Yes, I said the “H” word.
Don’t think it’s possible? How about some humor a story such as IT? ... Richie Tozier: "Doesn't smell like caca to me, senor" Do you think Stephen King Believed humor should be inserted in such a horror story? Sure he did! There’s a good reason for that. He knew there needed to be a cooling down time—a relaxation period lulling the reader (or viewer in one of his books made into movies,) into a false sense of safety. That way, when terror struck, it was that much more frightening than just a steady diet of slash, slam, and mangle, Ma’am.
I’d love to challenge readers of this newsletter who haven’t thought about adding a bit of comedy to a very serious subject matter story, to try it sometime. It may feel like you’re being unfaithful to your own story whether about death, supernatural, horror or even a basic “How-To” story (or how NOT to!) to attempt to add a bit of humor. It could be cringy humor or even a moment during a very serious situation when somebody lets a pun slip or their slip hang, should the case be. YOU are the master of your writing. Your characters are multifaceted. Or at least, they should be, just like all human personalities and characteristics. Nobody lives in a vacuum, unless that’s what you choose in your next sci-fi story about robo-cleaners run amok and and trapping a poor soul inside of it.
Should you write something in a different genre and add humor to it, please post the link under feedback at the bottom of this newsletter. You may see it highlighted in my next Comedy Newsletter.
I want to thank all of you who replied to my Newsfeed query about types of comedy that they enjoy. If it wasn’t for that little exchange, this Newsletter would not have brought you the above observations that hopefully will open serious minds to comedy!
That’s all the fun and pun she wrote for this edition of the Comedy Newsletter.
Until next time—laugh hard, laugh often! |
