Links are the Nuts and Bolts of the Site
Finding Writing.Com may just be the best thing that happened to you on the internet. If you're a writer with aspirations to publish or want to play around with words, you're in the right place.
To show your writing to others, you first have to upload it here in your portfolio. But what then? You have to learn how to turn that short story, poem, or novel chapter into a clickable link so that you can advertise it in other places around the site.
Everything that you create here can be made into a link that guides others to it. That's not only written things but also images, badges and awards you received or gave out, trinkets, and more.
"Writing.Com 101" has all of the explanations to everything on the site. It can be overwhelming to search through a whole book. Sometimes, you may not be sure what it is you're exactly looking for. That's why all of the links are shown with examples here: WritingML Help.
The essential parts to links on Writing.Com are the curly braces { and }. On the QWERTY keyboard, they are to the right of P. Using these curly braces, I can create links to everything within the site. To create a working link, image, show off a Merit Badge or Award, type the name of the item type right after the first curly brace. Add a colon : and then the ID number of the item.
Here are four examples of links to my Guest Book & Portfolio Guide. It's a forum that I created in which I used the text box to display some of my writing and also give members a place to leave a greeting for me.
Item link: {item:2316530} Clean and simple.
"Guest Book & Portfolio Guide"
B-item link: {b-item:2316530} Informative.
R-item link: {r-item:2316530} Includes the item rating.
"Guest Book & Portfolio Guide" [E]
Ld-item link: {ld-item:2316530} Includes the intro line to be more inviting.
"Guest Book & Portfolio Guide" E: Come on inside, find something to read, or say hi.
Each of these links shows some different information. The most common ones are the item link and the b-item link because most contests want to see b-item links and the item link is neat and simple.
