One of the things that I like about romance is the flexibility. It's strong enough to stand on its own as a genre but it can also be found on the side in basically every other genre too. I know some of the epic fantasy series I've read included a few romances. I even have a little romance going on in the background for my own epic fantasy series that I'll eventually write. Then there are those I've read that include mystery with romance or sci-fi. It helps at times. While I don't mind a full on, just romance, having a different element like trying to solve murders with the help of ghosts or included a Poe murder influence twist can help make a story a little more interesting, at least for me.
Since romance does well with other genres, let's consider what we can use to mix things up. Consider what you might want to write that is romance and...
Mystery
This is one that I probably will never write and didn't read much on its own, but when it's with mystery it can make for a fun combination. The civilian/detective combination is a good romance one. A favorite of mine involves the owner of an oddities shop and a detective trying to solve murders that show inspiration from Poe that started with a pig heart hidden in the floors of the main character's shop. That is just book one as more mysteries follow no matter how much the detective tries to keep the other one from getting involved in murder cases. One can also use two detectives with things like cold cases and ghosts if want to add an extra genre layer to the story. Have read at least one of those, which was an interesting approach. One can also write about characters who aren't police or detectives but still need to solve some king of mystery while also developing a romantic relationship.
fantasy
One of my favorite genres to write as I grew up reading fantasy novels, except for the occasional John Grisham or VC Andrews book. Fantasy is another genre that can stand on its own or mesh well with others because one can incorporate the different worlds and creatures with other genres, which included romance. It can be the main genre, with the love interest on the side. Or fantasy can be the side genre while the main focus is the relationships that happen between fantasy type character. If you check out the fantasy section in the book/story department, you will find a good amount that include a little romance on the side.
Horror
Now this sounds like a challenge. The whole focus on horror can be the scary element but there are characters who have human emotions that probably include love. Now, it can also be problematic for some characters (their relationship) in the story. If you have seen Scream or Scary Movie that spoofs the elements of horror, there is an element about a relationship that can be attached to the villain/killer. The romance could also maybe save someone. Just depends on the story. Since I don't read horror, I don't know the way romance gets intertwined but there are probably some out there.
Then there are the other genres as options. Like, if you happen to be funny, you could combine romance with comedy. An action/adventure could include romance on the side, like the movie The Mummy. You have many options. To help with the picking process here is a short list of genres to considering adding with romance:

What genre do you like to combine with romance when writing or reading?
Since there haven't been comments to my Romance newsletters recently, I'm going to give you a challenge instead. The challenge is to take the Romance genre as the main focus but add one of the genres from the list in this newsletter and combine them into one story. If you can make it work and enter a contest on the site, even better. Either way, have fun writing.
