Letter from the editor

When it comes to romance stories, it's fairly common for the characters to fall in love fast, or at least in a speed that seems on the side of quick. There are some books that manage the slow method, also known as a slow burn. However, in short stories and some books that are only around 80-100 ebook pages, there is limited space to get things done. Unless having spans of time go by in a few paragraphs, it might be that the romance happens on the faster side. Plus, there are some people who do experience a fast romance.

One thing that I've noticed as a reader in the genre is that there are certain circumstances that push for quick romance and not just in the sense of short word counts. A few of the romance tropes, or story lines and conflicts, can help give a reason behind things going on the fast side when it comes to the romance or falling in love part.

Vacation

Going on vacation, whether for a happy cause or because something unfortunate comes along (like getting left at the alter but still going on the honeymoon trip alone) creates an opportunity for a romance story. Doesn't matter if it's a couple of states away or a different country where the seasons are swapped. Having one of the characters put in a different location for a limited time frame means things happen to happen fast if there is going to be a big enough spark to give a satisfying happy ending that the reader is expecting due to the genre. Leaving a cold winter in Minnesota for a summer in Australia or New Zealand can make for a good setting to create a little romance. Culture differences and having to navigate different situations can force them to rely on someone there, which is where they may find the path that leads to falling in love.

Close Proximity/One Bed

I haven't read this very often but I have seen requests for this type of story in a Facebook group for m/m romance readers. This is basically where the main characters aren't in a relationship or even considering one, but due to a circumstance like a trip somewhere with friends puts them in a spot where they have to spend time really close to someone that they didn't plan or expect. Two have to share a bed because there isn't much space and when questioned if that will be a problem, they just go with it because they don't want to seem like a wimp or chicken so they go along with things. Spending time together, there is a surprising connection and that leads to something more. Since it's hard to put forced proximity over a long period of time, this is a type of story that gets to the romance/love at a quick pace.

Military Deployment

When it comes to reasons for things to go quick, deployment is one that has historical backgrounds and might make sense in providing a circumstance where a romance might move at a fast pace. When one of the characters is enlisted in the military, there are going to be times where they will have to leave if they are deployed. Having a romance with someone on the same deployment might negate that though there are other conflicts that arise from that approach. When it comes to a romance where only one person is enlisted there is the chance they might have to do a few things on a short timeline due to a pending or surprise deployment. The absence may help or hinder the romance, depending on the story, but the fact that the character will be gone for a given amount of time is a good reason for some pressure on the characters to get to the love factor a little faster compared to other situations.

Mates and Fantasy

Speculative fiction has its own situations, conflicts and reasons for falling in love really fast. One example is the concept of mates where often a deity of some kind has designated two souls to be together. When they find each other, in whatever type of meet cute (or not so cute) situations happens, the connection is instant. This can include magic but doesn't have to be something the characters can control. That is just one example. Romance might often happen on the side for fantasy or science fiction, but it is something that work as a side plot. This has a bigger chance for a slow burn, since the novels can take up multiple books, but you can also write a short story or flash fiction piece that is in the speculative fiction realm but that includes romance at a quick pace.

Falling in love fast due to circumstances is something that can be common in romance stories when it fits. Like any conflict or character aspect, we do our best not to force things along in order to keep the reader enjoying the experience of reading. With these options, there are plenty of stories one can write. If you feel like a challenge, try out something that is insta-love then try writing a slow burn (takes a lot longer) and see what you think of the results. See where the story takes you and have fun writing romance/love.

Ask & Answer

Do you enjoy the very quick, insta-love stories or do you prefer a slow burn?

Last month, for this newsletter, I discussed holiday drama and romance. During the season of many holidays, there is a chance something will come up whether it's related to family or a romantic relationship. Here are a couple of comments sent on the topic and items found within:

Comment by Merry_Mikey Author Icon:
Thanks for highlighting one of my stories! By doing so, you managed to initiate a double blush - one for the honor of being selected, and (another) one for the story's subject matter. *Wink*

- I'm always happy to showcase stories people have here on the site. It's not always easy to pick. The fact it got a double blush is quite a feat. *Wink*

Comment by Quick-Quill Author Icon:
The hallmark channel is filled with romance stories and holidays. I suggest writers use them to spark a story with a little romance in it. Everyone loves a Hallmark romance.

- Very true. While I am not a fan of them in general, there is a helpfulness that can come from watching the way Hallmark creates the romance storylines.
