About This Newsletter

Hi! I am Which Witch Is Which?🧹 and I am a guest editor of the Noticing Newbies Newsletter. I've got some tips and tricks for you to make the most out of the tools you are offered when you post your Static Item.

Making The Most of It

Have you been writing stuff? Been stashing it away in your portfolio here on Writing.com? Excellent! Let me give you some hints about how to set things up and use the tools provided to your advantage. You can do this with a brand-new item or go back to items you already have in your port and improve those.

If you are starting from scratch, click on the big green plus sign on the left side of your screen to Create a New Item.

Look for the gear-shaped thingy on the upper right-hand side of the form that opens up. Click on EDIT. I will go through all the boxes that need to be filled out and the best way to do this. Our goal is to make sure people can find your writing to read and even review it.

*Acorn* Add a Cover: This is where you can add an image. Think of it like the picture on the cover of a book. It helps catch the eye of a potential reader. You can use an image you already have in your computer files or you can choose one of the hundreds that Writing.com (WdC) has available to us. The trick is to pick an interesting image that relates to your writing.

*Acorn* Title: You know what this is, but do you know how important it is? An interesting, relevant title can draw a reader in instead of passing your writing by. I can't tell you how many times over the years I have seen comments in my reviews that the title is what made the reviewer chose my story or poem to review.

*Acorn* Brief Description: Look at this as a mini writing challenge. It should function as a blurb for your writing, again, to draw a reader in. The challenge is to write something interesting within the 90 character limit.

*Acorn* Intro Rating: There is a drop down for this one with a choice of Suitable for Everyone (E) or Not for Everyone (Non-E). This has to do with the title, cover image, and brief description only. As the owner of the item, you are obligated to rate this appropriately. If you have any questions about what that entails, there is a link (the little question mark) right there that explains everything.

*Acorn* Your Writing Goes Here...This is what I would call a text box. Hey, it's better than my earlier "gear-like thingy", right? Anyway, it should be pretty self-explanatory. That is where you type or copy/paste your writing.

*Acorn* Sub Type: There is a drop down for you choose your options. My advice here is to avoid "other" as your option if at all possible. This is another point to help people find your writing. Make use of it by labelling it correctly.

*Acorn* Folder/Location: If you are very new here, you probably are not to the point of having to create folders to keep your port organized. If you have, this is how you tell the system that you want this item put into a particular folder. (You do need at least a Basic level membership to be able to create folders in your portfolio.)

*Acorn* Content Rating: This is an incredibly important one to get right, but it can be tricky. Unless you are actually writing items that really are for ALL AGES, please do not choose Everyone. Our members can be as young as age 13. Click on the additional information link (the little question mark) and learn what would be appropriate for your writing.

*Exclaimbr* A special note on content rating: Writing.com does not censor your writing. You have the freedom to write whatever you want to, we only ask that you rate it appropriately to protect our young members and anyone else who may not care to read higher rated items. Just so you know, if you do not bother to put the appropriate rating on your writing, a Writing.com Moderator may come along and change it for you. It is your job as a writer to do your best to rate it appropriately, however. If you have any question, you can always post in one of the forums to request help. This might a good one to do that "Non-Technical Support Forum.

*Acorn* Make Public, Allow Everyone! This is another drop down with choices. I want to point out a couple of things. That "Make Public" option will make your item discoverable by an internet search. Keep Private For My Eyes Only will make your item invisible to other people looking in your port or doing any searches, including WdC searches. This is handy if you are in the process of writing something and are not ready for people to see it. Don't forget to change this setting once you are ready for views, though.

*Acorn* Genre #1: You have three places to indicate what genres your writing falls under. USE THEM. All of them, if possible. Avoid "other". Again, this dictates what searches people can use to find your writing. The drop down is there to help you pick out your options.

*Acorn* Keywords/Tags: This is another way to assist with searches. Experiment and see what key words bring all the readers to your item.

I am going to stop here, although there are more things that can be filled out on a Static Item. I will cover the other items in another edition of the Noticing Newbies Newsletter.

Feedback from my last Noticing Newbies Newsletter "Falling Down the Rabbit Hole

from tracker
Hi,
Enjoyed the Noticing Newbies Newsletter this month. I love your animated gifs. Your message to Newbies is right on! I have some under my belt and I am still in that rabbit hole just about every time I sign in. This is one time, among many, that someone who is no longer a newbie benefits from reading the newsletter.

I know why you are called Gemini Gem! You are a gem and a peach!
Aw, you are very sweet. I am glad you enjoyed the newsletter!

from Lilli Munster 🧿 ☕ 🎃
I fell down the WdC Rabbit Hole nearly six years ago and can't find the way out. Not complaining though as I love it here!
You know I am in that same rabbit hole with you, sister.
