Quote for the week:
"A cold wind blows, and I follow.
No time to rest my weary bones.
I hear her voice, and my heart grows hollow.
Best not walk these woods alone.
Best keep to the roads and out of the shadows.
Best get on home.
Best to leave them ghosts alone."

Many people list spiders as one of their greatest fears. Many legs, hairy bodies, sticky webs, and a venomous bite are the stuff fear is made of.
I was scared to death of all spiders until I was assigned to work for an arachnologist in college. As I learned more about them, I realized most of them aren't that scary and some of them are actually cute! Look up images of jumping spiders (Salticidae) if you don't believe me!
Most spiders do not have fangs strong enough to penetrate human skin. Of those that do, only a few cause a serious reaction, with the exception of people with allergies. The spiders that have the most frightening appearance usually don't have a serious bite. The bite of most tarantulas is usually similar to a bee sting.
The most dangerous spider in the world is said to be the Sydney funnel web spider, which is native to Australia. This spider has an extremely potent venom containing 40 different toxic proteins. They can usually be found in moist areas such as gardens and under logs or rocks. Their bite can be fatal within minutes to hours depending on the size of the victim. However, an antivenom was developed in 1981, so funnel web bites are no longer likely to be fatal if medical help is available. Other dangerous spiders include the black widow, brown recluse, and redback.
If you include spiders as horror monsters, you might want to give them abilities that ordinary spiders do not have. They might exist on another world where larger size or more potent venom is possible. Or maybe the spiders can actually be a tool used in defeating the real monsters, such as a new strain of stinging insects.
Something to try: Write a horror story that includes spiders. |
