About This Newsletter

My aunt named her cat "Surprise." First, because the cat showed up on her doorstep like a sweet furry surprise. The cat was originally thought to be a girl, but it turned out to be a boy. Double surprise.

Surprise Party

Writing.Com is, once again, about to turn a page, blow out some candles, and get a year older. Writing.Com will celebrate 24 years since going live. In internet years, that's like two centuries. The vast majority of websites that get users to interact were created later.

While the fact that there is a party is not mysterious at all, the annual week-long party is always full of surprises. Both the site owners and members offer daily activities and contests. There are millions of gift points up for grabs as well as merit badges, awards, trinkets, and other goodies galore.

One of the time-honored traditions is the daily rollout of a new merit badge, designed by The StoryMistress Author Icon.

Another daily treat is a party-themed Trinket. Be sure to collect it every day. Once the party is over, the trinkets are locked away and never come back out. *Shock*

Some of the games and activities remain a secret until the great unveiling on September 1, but others are already listed on "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. as the hosts want to hit the ground running with participants that sign up ahead of time.

Just like a party in real life, where you never know what kind of chocolates are in the box, the Writing.Com birthday party will leave you happy, exhilarated, exhausted, and with a bunch of new friends. Be sure to make your daily attendance mandatory. Once you allow it to sweep you up, you'll be surprised that the rest of the world isn't celebrating the site birthday like a national holiday.

Keep an eye out for the many announcements on the newsfeed and the revolving *BalloonR* icon in the left sidebar that gives you direct access to the party forum as soon as it opens. "Writing.Com Party Central 2024!Open in new Window.

Ask & Answer

Replies to my last Mystery newsletter "Edward NygmaOpen in new Window. that asked Who even are you?

~Brian K Compton~ Author Icon wrote: You article intones some of my thoughts about getting to know someone before I send comment or review. But, what do you think about headshots? I struggle with all these handles with different usernames and can't put a face to any. I think it's part of my condition, being bad with names. I know it helps, so I don't forget anyone. I'd like to address people at least by a first name rather than a linked handle/username which feels impersonal.

I too have trouble keeping people apart based on their handles or usernames alone. To be honest, the way I deal with that is to always use their username or handle to address them because I would get people mixed up otherwise. The fact that the username and handle can be different is also making it harder to remember who's who sometimes. Really, we can only do our best.
