Letter from the editor

Vacation - a word that's sure to bring a smile to one's face and a bounce to one's step.

Perhaps you just arrived on WDC. Or maybe you're a seasoned member. Whatever your specific reasons, you joined WDC because you wanted to. You wished to improve your writing abilities, you wanted to publish your work, you hoped to interact with other writers, or you just liked to read. Whatever your reasons, there will come a time when you need a break from your efforts here.

While I don't discount the Winter activities that many folks enjoy, Summer is often the time for vacations. Recharging the body and mind from everyday life is essential. And that includes time spent on WDC.

Whether by phone, which is not always easy to navigate, or by a laptop that I manage to get past my spouse and into my luggage, I usually find a way to check in on WDC while I'm on vacation. Whenever traveling, check the the potential Internet capability at your destination, especially if you take a cruise. Turns out the middle of the Great Lakes can be a dead zone for Internet access.

While on vacation, you may have to put your string of Consistency Achievement merit badges, among other things, on hold. Four Consistency Achievement merit badges were introduced in "Introducing Four New Consistency AchievementsOpen in new Window. on 7 Jan 2024. Many of you receive these consistency badges every seven days with some pretty long streaks. They include Visit Writing.Com, Send a Review, Post in a Forum, and Post on Newsfeed.

As an aside, you can stay logged in (keep cookie) to WDC from 1-day to 365-days, the latter being the site default. But don't make the mistake of thinking that just being logged in for seven days satisfies a seven-day requirement for a Visit Writing.Com Consistency Achievement MB. You must be logged in AND also load any page on Writing.Com each day to maintain consistency.

I submit vacation is and should be a time to relax and breathe easy. I needed to enjoy my free time. But I found it hard to let go of my streak quest in each Consistency badge. I had thought I might check in each day using my phone. But access was not to be. You, however, may find a way to maintain your streak(s).

Use the time off from work to let your mind (and eyes) wander. Notice things around you. Imagine how they might be used in a story. Set them aside for future stories. Keep that notebook handy for any ideas that present themselves. Vacation is only a few days ... a week ... two weeks ... or so. Then it's back to the grind.

In any case, WDC will be here when you return. And so will your next streak.

Write on!
