I See You
I know why you are here. Here at Writing.Com, that is. At least, I bet it is for the same reasons all of are here. We are writers or we wish to be writers. (By the way, if you write, you ARE a writer.)
If you are already a writer, then I would say that you are looking to improve your writing. That is what is all about here. That, and being part of writing community.
You need to get your writing seen and get feedback in order to improve, right? It can be scary if this isn't something you are used to doing. If you approach the feedback you get with the right attitude, you can learn so much from the other writers here.
So, what is the "right" attitude? We all want to hear that our writing is spectacular, but be ready to hear where we can improve. Don't take it as an attack or an insult, take it as one writer sharing "fresh eyes" and some knowledge with you.
Can this be hard to do? Absolutely. We all care about our writing, there is always that bit of pride attached our writing...and it can be difficult to set all that aside to read words of criticism, even if they are done with the best of intentions.
My last Noticing Newbies Newsletter was all about self-promotion on WdC so I will refer you to it for some good tips to getting your writing seen. "Hey Look! Look At MEEEEE!" There is one key skill I want to make sure you all have to take advantage of all the features of this site. You need to know how to link the writing you have here on WdC so people can access it easily.
I will show you the two most common type links. If you want more indepth information about linking, go to Writing.Com Tools on the left side of your screen. Click on WritingML: Docs & Help. Then scroll down to Create Links.
Here are the two most common types of links you will need to use:
{item:2293943}
It will look like this: "Merit Badge Magic" .
{bitem:2293943}
It will look like this:
You will need to substitute the ID number of your own item into the link so that it links your writing.
Linking your writing will make it easier for other WdC members to see you and your writing! You can use this to enter contests, promote your writing on newsfeed or other places on WdC.

From my last Noticing Newbies Newsletter "Hey Look! Look At MEEEEE!" , I asked the question: You can develope the skills of self-promotion right here at WdC. What is your favorite way to show off your writing?
Amethyst Snow Angel
Just a simple b-item Newsfeed post. I find that the plug pages are rather sluggish.
I agree that the Plug Page may not be the place to solely get responses, but it certainly could be used in conjunction with other efforts, like posting in newsfeed.
TheBusmanPoet
This is the only place I show it off. My wife enjoys reading what I wrote and she's made a binder to hold them. I print them out for her.
Yay for your wife being your biggest fan!
jdennis01jaj
I torture my friends with my stories, and when they tell me: "No thanks," I find some new friends.
How often do you have to change your friends?
Dave has company
Entering contests.
Yes, this is a great way to get people to your writing.
tj-Merry Mischief Maker
Spray paint it on the sides of train cars?
That would have to an art form in itself, I would think.
Anna Marie Carlson
Sharing it with my friends at WdC and with those I meet.
That is the beautiful thing about this site.
keyisfake
Getting it published.
That is a fantastic way to do it. |
