Letter from the editor

Since January when the StoryMaster introduced four new Achievement merit badges--Visit Writing.Com, Send a Review, Post in a Forum, and Post on the Newsfeed--much has been penned regarding their acceptance or rejection.

Members can earn 16-plus merit badges toward their Community Recognition each month.

Call me positive. I believe member participation in these areas is up. The StoryMaster agrees (see "Note: The impact of the Review Streaks is pretty clea..."). And to that end, I thought I'd discuss that participation. Let's start with a question.

How much time do you have to spend each day completing the requirements for these four merit badges?

As long as you haven't opted out of the Achievement system, the Visit Writing.Com is "the easiest decision in the history of decisions". You can stay logged in to WDC up to 365 days through your Account Settings, thus getting that badge every seven days.

These next two badges, Post in a Forum and Post on the Newsfeed, require just a little more action on your part to achieve. Check your Favorites column (right-hand side of each page) for any forums that you might follow. If you haven't set up any favorites yet, consider adding those forums or groups that interest you to your Favorites. (Click on the plus sign following the forum's title.)

Locate the Newsfeed in the Navigation menu (on the left side of your page). Depending what you have highlighted in your Port, you'll see either the Personal Newsfeed or the Community Newsfeed. It's easy to toggle from one to the other. Take a moment to see which interests you more and set that feed to open each time you access the Newsfeed.

In any case, the requirements can be completed in five minutes or less.

The final new badge is the Send a Review. Of the four, this one will most likely take the longest to complete.

Sending a review is actually easy to do. A review is just a person's opinion of a story or poem at one point in time. A personal note: you can offer criticism, but be positive in your comments. Never bully anyone.

If you've never submitted one, you can do so from a section entitled Review: Share Your Opinion located at the bottom of each item. On that note, anyone can craft and submit a helpful review in about 15 minutes. How?

*Bulleto* Read the item first for sheer enjoyment. Note your overall impression only; jot down a few thoughts about what impacts you personally. Did you connect with the characters or the storyline, or not? Don't worry about grammar and punctuation at this point.

*Bulleto* Read the item a second time with an eye toward the details. Note any repetitive punctuation or grammar errors, storyline inconsistencies, and dialogue that does or doesn't work. Jot down what works as well as what doesn't.

*Bulleto* Finally, make a short checklist of items you consider when you review. Your checklist should correspond to the paragraphs in your review.

Write it down and submit your review.

If you get serious about doing reviews, consider:

Creating a Review Template that incorporates all the administrative and routine information that you repeat in each written review.

Checking out the Public Review page for some examples of what others are doing.

I submit that anyone can complete the daily four Achievement merit badge regimen in less than 20 minutes each day. It's a great habit to encourage.
