The proof of the pudding.
This month’s newsletter topic had been bothering me for a while but today I know exactly what I want to talk about. First off I have a short story for you, which starts with some good news and some bad.
My husband applied for a job about a month and a half ago and got an interview 3 weeks back, he was promised the earth, was told that he should get a job as deputy manger of the store, but at the very least duty manger. With Lee’s skills and degree, his experience and enthusiasm, the interviewer was impressed and proceeded to rave about the exciting opportunities should he take the job. There was one snag. He had to have a second interview with the area manager and would be contacted as soon as possible to arrange a suitable date.
For the past 3 weeks we have both been on tender hooks waiting to hear about this fantastic new job, Lee lost his mobile phone and an embarrassing mishap with a direct debit payment ensured that our home landline was disconnected, that meant no way for the company to contact Lee. We thought all was lost, but as luck happened the day the phone was re-connected the company telephoned and a second interview was arranged for this morning at 6am.
Lee was so convinced that the job was his that he devised a plan, he would attend the interview, I would then get a train and meet him in the city. We would have breakfast and treat ourselves to a shopping spree before returning home to relax before he goes to work. And that is where it all went wrong. The interview went well, but instead of being offered the deputy manager’s position, he was told he would have to start at ground zero as a store assistant and prove his worth before being considered for promotion. All well and good, but with a student wife with no income, a house to run and bills to pay, taking the job is just not an option unless they reconsider their offer.
I told Lee I would not go to University and instead get a job so that he could take the hit in wages and work up through the ranks. Lee refused point blank and didn’t hesitate in telling me that I am to go to University, work hard and then get the job of my dreams, and he will work all the hours going in his current job to keep us afloat till I finish my course.
Wow what a declaration of his love to me! I was awestruck.
This made me think back to one of my earliest newsletter when I looked at the definitions of love, I had written about the symptoms of love and how we can recognise that we are in love ourselves, but what about finding out if another person loves us back? Here it is absolute proof. How could I ever now question his devotion to me? I couldn’t! His love is so great that he is willing to sacrifice his own career so that I can try and realise my dreams.
This has given me great inspiration for my writing; it got me thinking of other such sacrifices my characters could endure for the one they love. There is amazing scope here from buying an item that someone always wanted but could never get, even though it cost a lot of money, or a sibling giving a kidney or marrow to save a brother or sister, the list is endless.
Try it yourself, come up with the ultimate proof of love to another in your writing, the build up and scenario will provide enough action, drama and suspense to keep your readers well and truly on the edge of their seats.

This is really a great excercise and a very good way to develop a story's character. Thank you for such a useful newsletter. essence of thought
Getting down to the nitty gritty, I don't want to forget about the romance and the love. That's why I subscribed to this newsletter instead of the For Authors nl.
Honestly, I feel I've been cheated this week. Could you think of nothing on-topic? What a let-down to expect to read romance/love and instead find a ramble that sounds like you volunteered for the wrong NL. John~Ashen
I'm so sorry you felt that way John, my aim was to emphasise the importance of building realistic characters, with realistic backgrounds so that our writing becomes a more enjoyable experience for our readers. I admit it was a little off topic but I felt it was relevant. I will endeavour to provide more stimulating newsletters in the future. Thank you for your feedback and I hope I have done better this time round. Belle |
